Default First oil change...

Just got my first oil change done on my truck( technically second bc dealer did first change free). My local chain mechanic shop mr. Tire said the recommended oil was synthetic from manufacturer, which I wanted any way and they put valvoline max life in it. I read up on it and it says its a synthetic blend and recommended for engines with over 75,000mi. But it is fine for new or used engines as well.

Anybody object to this oil? It's 5w20 like recommended but just wonder someone who knows more about these hemi's than me if this stuff is any good or not. Oil change, fluids, and full checkup on brakes and fittings was only $43. I think that's deff reasonable.

Thanks for any input.

The main thing is you still have oil in the engine. If you didn't keep up with your oil changes, than you'll end up with a problem. I've always done my own oil changes, probably because I'm anal and I don't trust places to put in what they say they're going to. I personally will only run a FULL synthetic, not a blend. Only car I've ever taken to dealer for oil changes is my wife's civic, just because it is leased. You can run that oil for now, but my opinion would be to go full synthetic on the next change. Everyone will have their own opinion when it comes to oil, but just stick to the weights given in the manual.

+1 on the PP. I use full syn just because I'm anal, but in all honesty if you stay on top of your oil changes and routine maintenance you'll be fine. Just use a quality brand and the correct viscosity. If you do go full syn I recommend PP, Royal Purple, or Amsoil.

Full syn for sure. Amsoil is top drawer and Discount Auto Performance, supporters of this forum are good folks to deal with.

I have two years of free oil changes on my new truck-but then I plan on switching to full syn. I found 10w30 Royal Purple Full Synthetic on Ebay where for $70 you get 12 quarts (they actually sold it in 3 -1 gallon jugs). That works out to less than $6 a quart...pretty hard to beat! However, last time I looked I could not find as good of deal for 5w20 like our Ram trucks take.

You have to use 5w-20 in our MDS equipped Hemi's. If you put 10w-30 in it, it will throw a CEL light and disable MDS. Another member found this out when the Ram service dept put the wrong oil in. as soon as he started to pull off in his truck, the above happened.

Yah, that's why my previous post said in the last sentence that our trucks take 5w20...the 10w30 oil is for my Camaro SS.
