Default Thoughts on tipping on non-restaurant venues?

So, I'm typically a good tipper when it comes to restaurant service. My fiancee things I tip too much, but if the service is bad I won't tip at all. But, That's not the point of this thread though.

I went in for an oil change last week to a drive-thru Jiffy Lube while I was out of town and when it came to paying for the work, they had a tip option you couldn't work around on the card machine. There was no "Add Tip" request, it was just a $ or % option. I have never seen a tip option at any oil change place and I don't feel that there should be.

I didn't add a tip because I don't feel that something like an oil change warrants a tip. They did not do any extra service for me, hell they didn't even check if all my lights were working (had fiddled with HIDs earlier and one wasn't working). While I was pulling out I know the one tech looked for how much the tip was and was obviously pissed that there was nothing.

To me, a tip is warranted under situations such as restaurants/pubs where someone has to take an active approach to keep me satisfied.

I'm curious to know what people would do in this situation. If there is a tip option, do you feel pressured into adding a tip?

I think you made the right move. I'll tip someone at a pub or restaurant based on the quality of service I get but I really hate when places who don't serve me like that ask for a tip. I don't really understand why they think they should get one when they are simply doing they're job. That's what their hourly wage is for...

around San Diego, Jiffy Lube is about to be going out of business
they have employees standing out front holding signs that basically beg for business
they have been caught screwing customers too many times

I went there over 4 years ago with my '99 chevy 1500
requested Castrol 10w-30 & full Lube
i caught them putting in Valvoline & not changing the oil filter
they didn't even check the rear end until i brought it to the managers attention
they didn't even grease the front end, until i said i wanted it greased, they argued with me saying that my Chevy didn't have grease fittings up front, that were all sealed units.
I told them that i wanted the front end greased & that they needed to look again. I did Not have the original front assembly, it had all been replaced
I tell everyone to stay far away from Jiffy Lube, they were also caught by the State of California, doing work not requested & not doing work that was requested

I only tip when the service is above average. When it is average or below I do not leave a tip at all. I know this is against the social norms of the US but I think the tipping system should only be used when the service is above what is expected.

So in an oil change booth in order for them to receive a tip they would have to do more than just an oil change and checking the lights and fluids. However if they did more than this (granted there isnt much more they can do) I would then tip them.

I agree with Kurtis... screw 'em... it's not the type of place where you'd typically expect tips.

On the rare occasion that I bring my truck to a car wash, I don't tip when I pay for the wash, but I will typically give the person (usually some 15-18 year old) $5-$6 bucks for wiping everything down... I'm ALWAYS watching from the porch as they do this though.

when I get bad service somewhere I never not tip... my mother was a waitress for too many years and she trained me right. I'll leave $1, regardless of what my total check price was. If I get good service I'll leave (usually) double tax, plus a little more.

just my take

I agree with Kurtis as well, they are doing their job which they already get paid for. In a place like an oil change shop, someone would have to go out of their way and provide a little extra service to warrant a tip. At restaurants, I usually have an idea about how much I'm going to spend so I figure around 15% of that and depending on the service, the number may go up or down. To me, whether it's a bar or restaurant, if the person is friendly and attentive without being annoying, they make good money off of me. I waited tables at a couple different places when I was in college so I know what it's like to work hard and still get stiffed by some cheap a$$. What I strongly dislike are those places where gratuity is automatically included. That's crap and if the service sucks, I don't feel I should be forced to tip. If there is a tip option, no, I don't feel pressured to do so. Way I look at it, I work hard for my money and anyone that expects a tip should do the same.

For restaurant workers tips are expected and calculated into their wages but I don't believe that to be true of oil change grease monkeys. I generally tip well and even better for service that is above the call of duty. However, I do not tip people that are already adequately compensated with their normal wages if they are just doing their job. If they went out of their way to do something extra special I might but in general I do not.

I am personally offended that so many places have the tip jar out begging for money as some sort of thanks for just doing there job. Having a tip automatically applied takes that offense to a new level. I would have told the manager and corporate that such strong arm tactics were inexcusable and that I would never darken their door again.

I agree with everyone so far. I tip pretty well at restaurants but, outside of that it has to be something out of the ordinary. I've never seen a tip option at an oil change place. It bothers me enough when there is a tip option at restaurants where you order at the counter. Like at Moe's or Starbucks. The only time I've tipped at a coffee place was at a local one with outstanding service that treats you like a regular.

restaurant and hair cut are the only place i tip. i will sometimes let the cashier at the grocery store or coffee places keep the change if it is $0.05 or less. i think what you did was fair. personally the only person that changes the oil in my truck is me and i tip myself good.
