Default What to do to my 318

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2. It has 150,001 miles on it and I'm ready to upgrade it. The more and more I think the more and more I want to drop in a crate motor. Any ideas as to what would be my best bet? I found a built 318 off precisionengine.com. It has 300 horse, 350 with the stage 2 port, and 325 ft/lbs. The best thing is that it has a 7 year/70,000 mile warranty. I will also do full exhaust, headers and cold air intake and probably a performance module. I have a couple questions. What is my best bet as far as trannys go? Rebuild my 46re? Buy a new one? Or are there any allison trannys that I could put in it? Im looking to be around 375 horse power, 350ft/lbs. What about a driveline? Should i upgrade? And rear? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i think your stock transmission should be fine as long as it is properly maintained. from what i have read having the stock transmsion rebuilt cost about the same as getting a mega viper trans for your truck except the mega vipers are suppose to be good for up to 700hp. all the stock driver train should be fine as long as you maintain it.

Make sure to calculate your exhaust size correctly based on your target horsepower. Almost all of the headers I've seen on Jegs and Summit have a 3" collector, which is the appropriate size for single exhaust at 300hp. Going dual exhaust might hurt your performance by not having the flow you need.

I was considering a 360 when I did my second rebuild, but I remember reading about a few things concerning the transmission maybe not holding up. There is also a flexplate issue.

I wish I had done a crate engine my first go, as it would have been around the same price now that I've done it twice

Ive always fancied dropping in a 5.7l hemi and getting 345hp stock but I would get a donor truck that someone wrecked and steal the tranny, computer, etc. But the 318 crate motor sounds like a good deal I would do that as it will go into your truck easier. But on the Hemi note a trip to the auction wouldnt hurt see what you can find.
