Default column shifter broke

i have a 2002 ram 1500 sport 4x4 with a 5.9L engine. my column shifter broke this morning. It had been getting harder and harder to shift out of park over the past 2 months, ever since i had the transmission rebuilt. now it doesn't shift at all. had to have the truck towed to a garage. has anyone had this problem before, and if so, what was the problem and solution so I have an idea what i'm in for.

Thanks, I also got a reply saying that it could be a cable and or bracket in the steering column that either got broken or tangled up. I will look into both his and your suggestions. thanks for getting back to me.
