There's nothing wrong with the 6 speed(even though it only uses 5 normally). 10 years ago they only had 4 speeds. The 8 speed is nice I'm sure but people are really over exaggerating this.

I don't have an issue with the 6 speed, but I do have an issue with why it's a 6 speed but they only use 5 speeds in normal driving (the kind we do 98% of the time)?

I wondered why the EPA's figures for the gas mileage on the 6 speed auto didn't improve over the 5 speed autos?

The only reason I care about the 8 speed is the improved gas mileage and acceleration.

It's a bonus you get both from it.

Had the 6 speed been geared better so first gear was a bit lower and then 5th gear was a 1:1 and 6th was an ultra overdrive, they could of gotten
15 city / 21 hwy from the 6 speed for the 4x2's and at that point going to the 8 speed would of been trivial.
But as it stands, from what I can tell, the 8 speed is geared better for acceleration when needed, plus better for MPG when on the highway.

Those two things combined make it a compelling alternative to the so called 6 speed that doesn't really use 6 gears.

The "5 speed" (545rfe) and "6 speed" (65rfe) are the same transmission. Both have 6 forward gears and skip the 3rd gear on normal upshifts in drive. It was renamed for marketing.

The 8 speed has the exact same final gear ratio as the 545rfe/65rfe.

I agree. I don't mind the 6 at all. I would rather have my 6 with 3.92 than an 8 with 3.21. I may get the 8 in a couple years if I can be sure what gears I have.

I use my ERS quite often and I go through all 6 gears. It sure feels like six gears, indicates what gear I'm in, and sounds like six gears to me. I guess I am not a normal driver. I can accept that.

^yes with the 4th gen trucks if you use ERS mode you can access all 6 gears. Doesn't matter if it's the 545rfe or 65rfe either. But the 2nd and 3rd gears are so close in ratio it's not really worth it, they are nearly the same gear.

I do agree with how so very close in ratio, 2nd(1.67:1) and 3rd(1.50:1) are to each other. It's as close as 5th(0.75:1) is to 6th(0.67:1). You can feel the rpm drop change if you are listening closely. But I think this RFE stuff has all been covered many moons ago, soooooo, Ya'll be good.

I actually didn't mind the 5 in the 09 after using a DS to shut down the MDS. I didn't even need the tow mode with the 3.92's. With the 3.55'a in my 13 I am stuck using it again and losing MPGs. I usually just leave it in 6th to keep the MDS off. Sure the 8spd is nice but not a huge deal to me. I will be happier when the release the DS tuning for the 13's more than anything since the 87 tune and MDS off gained me a couple MPG in my 09 hopefully it will do the same in this one. Maybe next time I will try out a 8 spd of there isn't a newer tranny by then.

Interesting read there. I have the 3.92s with the "6" speed so that is ggod to hear haha. How do you like the 8 speed when you start going?

Wrong.....the final drives are the same.........for those of you wishing you had an 8 speed.....don't. There is nothing wrong with 6 speed trannys. The 8 speed might (who races to 75mph?? who cares??) get to speed a few 10th of a second faster but crusing the freeway, its all the same.
