Your truck should have the receiver hitch on it. If not check with your dealer or (if you still have it) window sticker. I would not tow anything with the bumper. The receiver hitch is the smart way to go. You'll also need a ball mount. I think the proper drop for the mount would have the ball around 24" off the ground. Any towing shop can help you in selecting the correct mount and drop.

There are a few things I do not comprise with on vehicles. 1) tires, 2) brakes and, 3) towing hitches. Trying to go on the cheap in any of these will only get you in trouble big time. A "light" 500~1000lb trailer that breaks free from your truck going 50mph is one hell of a projectile. I saw one of those portable cement mixers come lose from a pick up and slam into a parked car. Damn near totaled the car. Thankfully no one was inside.

As others have said, very strange no receiver hitch was included. Since you say this is all new to you, perhaps you are overlooking it. Otherwise, I wouid go back to the dealer. If indeed for whatever reason your truck did not come equipped with one, check out etrailer.com. Curt, Reese both make a good hitch.

My trailer empty is about 1500lbs, at that weight the factory brake controller works best set @ 0.5.

As for the ball, I have a 3 in 1 rated @ 10,000lbs & its adjustable for height. About $125 @ Rural King locally.

Nope. Just because the truck is EQUIPPED to tow, the hitch is still an option. Not all people will tow. Mine is equipped with the "tow" package, however I did not order the hitch. (Now my boss can't ask me to tow a boat through the muddy yard at work)

Mine had tow package with class IV hitch. It seems strange a tow package without the package.

There is no such thing as a "tow package" on the 1500 Ram. The brake controller, hitch, tow mirrors etc are purchased as separate options so it is certainly very possible that the OP purchased a truck with the brake controller...but not with a trailer hitch.

Also on a somewhat related note, Hemi equipped trucks get the heavy duty engine and transmission coolers as standard and these coolers should not be misconstrued as part of the non existent "towing package."

Certainly true and I suppose possible, but I cannot imagine why anyone would buy the factory brake controller and not a hitch.

I bought my hitch from the dealership and I put it on n 30 minutes. I was not patient to wait 3 or 4 days until a package came in.

bought the rest of my hitch from the dealer( the square thingy below the bumper). bolts on with 3 bolts. 20 min install time.$140. Most of the express package trucks don't come with them.

ok im in the same boatand yes seems odd to have tow package but no receiver.as a recient gm convert im scratching my head on this. i can put factory one on but it looks like a small addition to the framework thats already there. my question is what does the factory mean by weight distributing equipment because that of course changes weight i can tow with the addition of smallish looking factory piece.
