Default I have the stink !

I to have the stinky antifreeze smell under the hood and in the cab .Truck just hit 2k miles I called dealer and of course they have never heard of this. Is this a wide spread problem or just a few trucks involved. I really hate bringing truck in to dealer . Has anyone drained the cooling system including the engine block ,flushing with clean water ,then replacing with the 2012 older antifreeze. I would rather do this myself at my convenance at the cost of 3 gallons of antifreeze vs a lost day from work. Also is it the hoses that are the problem or is the 2013 oat antifreeze? thanks

While I at my dealership yesterday ordering the cabin filter door, I walked over to service and mentioned this. About 8 eyebrows popped. No one had any clue this was an issue .. even on the HEMI's in general. A guy looked on the PC and saw no trace of a TSB or recall. Nuttin. I told him it was coming down the pipe, but probably wasn't official yet. Also mentioned the TSB might be there but the wording doesn't jump right out into your face .. it's subtle. Coolant-hoses-smell. Look for that, I said.

I resolved to just return when it's official and be first in line. And I'll bring a copy of the recall and TSB when I do, so I don't just get a room of high brow duh'ssss.

Great thread!

Keep the reports, and updates coming please

Default Dead Carcass

Glad I found this information. I've got a 2014 Ram 1500, 5.7 Hemi. I got the truck in November. In December right around 2800 miles I started smelling a dead, rotting smell coming from the front of the vehicle. When I would stop at a red light or idle, the smell would flood the cab. It is AWFUL. Wife won't even ride with me. I noticed it after being at the hunting camp, so I figured something had got in a crevice and died. I can't find it though. It's been 6 weeks now, so I'll be taking this carcass-mobile to the dealer on Monday.

I'll report back.

I went from new car to new carcass smell.

Well, my truck just turned 11,000 KMs, and the smell is basically gone. It surfaced around 5000 KM and was at it's worst at 7000 KM. At it's worst it gave me a headache from sitting in stop and go traffic. We shall see if it gets worse as it warms up outside.

I can't recall - has anyone installed the cabin air filter and noticed an appreciable improvement??

Thanks,

I started noticing the smell on mine at around 2k miles. I have a 2013 Ram 1500, 5.7, 8-speed. I dropped it off at the dealer this morning and the shop manager stated he had "heard" of this issue, but has not had any come in to the shop. He stated they would look in to it and get back to me. I just received a call and I am NOT happy. He read a "starred" bulletin from Dodge that stated there is a reaction between the OAT coolant and the hoses, but at this time there is no repairs authorized until a fix is found. So I asked him if that meant I am supposed to drive around a 45k dollar stink-mobile. He didn't really have an answer and said his hands were tied.

This is ridiculous. I absolutely love this truck too, other than the stench!!

Same thing here, just shy of 7,000 miles on my '13 and everything smells perfectly normal. I can't smell anything nasty in the radiator or the overflow tank.

Here is my armchair QB of what is happening. I think it is random because it is not a reaction between the hoses and coolant but instead in the pre-sale prep some of the dealerships have "topped-off" with the wrong coolant causing the stink issue. This is why replacing the hoses and flushing new coolant works, it gets rid of the mixed coolant. Just a thougth, if it was a bad bath of hoses it should hit all the trucks manufactured at a certain time, not just randoms here or there.

My local dealership pulled up this "Star Case", Case# 1307000003, Release Date: 10/24/2013

Symptom/Vehicle Issue:
Foul Odor or Smell Emitted from Engine Compartment and HVAC Vents

Discussion:
"Customers may notice a foul odor entering the vehicle that may also be noticed when approaching the front of the vehicle. The foul odor is more noticeable as the engine reaches operating temperature. Engineering has determined the cause of the odor is a reaction between OAT coolant and certain compounds used in sulfer cured hoses. Engineering is working to resolve the issue by changing the hose compound. No repairs should be performed to the vehicle at this time. Although the issue is bothersome it has no effect on the durability or longevity of the cooling system components."

So basically, the realize there is a problem, but they are not authorizing warranty repair.
