Default Sarting a new project

I'll be starting a new project, pretty much as soon as the weather clears up and begins to cooperate. The wife's Charger came equipped with a back up camera system.... I like it, I want one just like it LOL

Unfortunately it's pretty much cost prohibitive to get a new head unit/ stereo set up. If I go with the new head unit, I'll also want speakers, amps, etc... I'll be looking at well over $1000 for what I want.

Instead I ordered a rear view mirror LCD monitor and a camera that hooks up to the license plate, connected together via a cable and CMOS technology.
These are what I'm going to install...

What I'm thinking is that instead of having it get activated by going in to reverse, I'm going to put it on a fused toggle switch so that I can turn it on whenever I desire. This will allow me to take a peek at what ever is tucked up behind the truck. I frequently can't see what's behind me, as they're right on my tail. Sometimes the only way that I know they're back there is that I can see just the edge of a rear quarter panel or tire. I very much dislike having someone disappear behind my truck.

I guess I just need to figure out where to mount the switch.

Hook the camera up to your reverse light and also to a switch to power when you want to watch when going forward. Easy to install with a diode in the reverse wire so the power goes in one direction and does not light up your reverse lights when you use the switch. Will cost you less than $1 for the diode.

Mostly due to not knowing where the hell I should mount a switch I'm going with the reverse lights trigger.

The weather sucks right now, so I suspect it'll be a few days before I can start digging in. It's been raining just enough to prevent any sort of modding on the truck LOL.

I'm not sure which end to start on. I'm thinking that I'll start on the end with the camera, as I have an RCA cable that I'm not sure will be long enough, and if I need to extend it, I'd rather do it inside the cabin of the truck, rather than underneath. The power wires that I need to run shouldn't be a problem I can splice on anywhere if I'm too short.

I'll update as I get in to it.

You can grab the reverse wire off the 7 pin trailer plug behind the bumper. That is where I connected my IPCW light bar to get the reverse wire.

I'm not worried about finding the reverse wire. I've already tapped it for my LED strip light, so tapping it again shouldn't be a problem.

I did run into a snag of sorts, though it wasn't unexpected.

The video cable that came with the camera isn't long enough to reach from the license plate up to the rear view mirror. I started at the camera and started running the cable. I made it to up under the passenger seat with only about 3 feet left. This is not nearly enough. I've ordered a 12 foot cable from Amazon (only $5) that should be here early next week. I couldn't find any that were video only locally... everything was right/ white/ yellow.

My project is on hold until the longer cable comes in. More to follow.

I finally got everything I needed to finish my project. I'm still not sure that I like the "monitor" as it's not as clear as I would have liked. I may go with a different version of the mirror monitor down the road, but this will do for now.

This is the mirror without the truck in reverse, so it's "off" at this point.

Here it is in the "on" position, with the truck in reverse. Granted all that can be seen in my gate and the "boat port" beyond.

Now that you have had this installed for a while, how do you like it. What mirror did you end up with? Do you remember what cable you had to order from Amazon?
Thank you
Joe
