I was just wondering if the 3.21 rear end is weaker than the 3.55 or 3.92? Or maybe towing heavy with the 3.21 would put too much stress on the tranny?? From what you posted, it really seems like they shouldn't have downgraded the tow rating for this combo.

Before I attempt to get the stealership to give me what I paid for, I just want to make sure it's the best move. I like the 1400-1500 RPM on the highway, but I don't like the idea of over taxing my tranny or causing damage to a weak rear end.
Did you order your truck from the factory? Did you specifically pay $50 more for the 3.55 option, or were you told the standard was with the 3.55's?

I don't see why the 3.21 would be any weaker than the 3.55 or 3.92, but I don't know that for a fact. I don't see how it would stress the tranny out more than the 3.55 since the ratios actually favor the 8sp/3.21 combo over the 6sp/3.92 combo on the lower gears.

They may have downgraded the 8sp/3.21 combo because in the top gear (8th) it will be way down out of the power band around 1200 RPM or it might be just pure marketing. I'm guessing the rational is the same as for the 6sp/3.21 combo or 6sp/3.55 combo.

For towing you can just drop down to 7th and be at the same happy place as the 6sp/3.92 combo.

Unfortunately Chrysler isn't helping any of you make the decision and they are the ones that are setting the recommended tow ratings. If it were me I would be demanding some kinda satisfaction from the dealer. It's one thing to change how something is built as long as it is meeting the same design requirement but this change up doesn't do that.

Tested the spreadsheet mdragon9 posted. Right on the money for my 8 sp. 3.92.

How can you compare apples to oranges ?

forgetting about the engine, V-6 or HEMI
just stick with the 8 speed transmission

with the 3 different differential ratios
3.21 has the lowest torque, but gets the best MPG, at any given speed the RPM will be the lowest of the 3
3.55 has mid range torque, MPG is not quite as good
3.92 has the most torque, but you lose a bit more MPG

torque is needed for pulling power & quicker take offs

No, the truck was already built. The build sheet and window sticker said 3.55.

Did your window sticker show a $50 fee (US) for the 3.55?

That's not good. I should be picking up my Big Horn this next week and I ordered and paid more for the 3.55. My order sheet, build sheet, window sticker, and VOTS all showed 3.55. I will not be a happy camper if my truck does not come with what I ordered on it.

I am not 100% sure what the window sticker said. It was on when the truck showed up but was removed when I picked it up. The build sheet said 3.55

Definitely have a look underneath before agreeing to take the truck.

Without a doubt! That's one of the first things I'm going to do. My salesperson is going to think I'm nuts when I crawl underneath the truck before I even set foot inside.

I found the drive ratio chart posted by mdragon9 to be very useful; however, I do not agree with the comment that "A hemi with the 8 speed and 3.21 should feel snappier overall than a hemi with the 6 speed and 3.55." The example given, and shown to be accurate from the chart, "at 1500 RPM, you should be going about 68 MPH with the 8 speed/3.21 and about 61 MPH with the 6 speed/3.55 combo." This is true, however, that is at 8th gear / 6th gear.

I guess it all depends on what "feel snappier" means, but I would evaluate that as how does it feel going thru the gears. The chart shows that at 1500 rpm the 3.21 ratio 8 speed would have you going at 9.74 mph at end of 1st gear compared to 13.82 mph for the 6 speed 3.55 truck (also at end of first gear). To me, that would feel "snappier" as I would be going faster thru first gear with the 3.55 truck than the 3.21 truck (regardless of the 8 vs 6 speed).

Do you read the chart that way, too?
