Default new 6 speed transmission

Has anyone ever thought bout putting a new 6 speed trans in a 2nd gen truck? Drove a newer dodge today with one and thought this could save me in gas milage.

Purely speculation here, but I would assume since they no longer use the 5.2's or 5.9's that the bell housing would be different. I would also guess the computer plays a big role in the new 6 speeds which wouldn't work with 2nd gen trucks. Just a guess.

For the amount of money and effort it would take, you could go to Gear Vendors and get a 6 speed conversion for your 46re/rh;

I'm just going to throw this out there...IMO the cost of updating it to a 6 speed would most likely cancel out and/or negate any fuel savings. How long would it take for you to break even?

OR, the value of your truck plus the cost of updating it would probably be somewhere in the ballpark (not exactly) of just updating to a newer truck.

DRX^ has provided a link (a pretty good one I might add) that may be an option, but then again, at over $3000+ I'd have to really think about the newer truck.
