Default 2nd gear gone/bad

we have a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 5.9 appx 70k that has a bad/gone 2nd gear. I have looked through the first 4/5 pages of this area and am seeing references to bands. Questions - is there a way to tell from driving if band adjusted is needed or if the band is "gone" and if so, does that generally mean a replacement?

Also, the oil pressure is increasing as it shifts up.

This was my FIL's truck and when looking back through the service records I can see he had issues in the beginning with this around 25-35k.

Thank you in advance for your help.

update

the strut for the band appears to be broke, so fixing that along w/ fluid and filter change, looking at a rebuild down the road - just wonder how long that road will be???
