Pepboys told me I only have a couple weeks left on my front brakes

Stay away from Pepboys they are ripoff artists. If you are not comfortable doing the job yourself then try and find a good independent shop that will do your brakes. Asking friends or family for references on a repair shop is a good place to start. And 32k mi on a set of brakes is not bad.

I did my first brake pad change at 86K miles.... literally took me 30 minutes total... it was the easiest one I have done on any of my vehicles. I agree with the post above about asking some friends, etc. Someone you know can help you with this. You'll save money and learn something at the same time.

Alrighty dstone, remember that every time you put your foot on the brake pedal, you are trying to slow down two and a half tons of steel (insert high school physics lesson). I would say 32K miles is a little on the early side, but then again, I haven't seen the brakes and I do not trust anything PepBoys say. Definitely get a second opinion. And I would agree with other members, take it to a Mom & Pop (independent) shop (not PepBoys). $300 is a bit pricey, but not unreasonable.

when you step on the brakes is there a squealing sound? if not then your good. brake pads have little metal tabs on them that dont touch the rotors until the pad wears down, when they do touch, your brakes make squealing sounds to let you know its time to replace them.

They dont all have sqealers on them anymore. I just swapped out the pads on our 03 Durango the other day, no squealers on the pads that were there or the replacements.

I only have 35k km (22k miles) on my 3 year old 10' RCSB 4x4,
and my front pads are due for replacement soon, within the next month or two (always do my own since I was 16)
... almost all fast City stoplight racing and hit the track on weekends.

I will also need a new set of 305/50R20 Terra Grapplers,
burned those off in just 3 years too.

I just turned 60,000 miles and need them now. I'm sticking with the dealer breaks pads and rotors. Next time I'll get more than 60 out of it for sure.

just turned 60k on my Ram and don't need a thing yet... look great . I'm driving 50/50 city and highway so they should last a bit longer, plus we know it's HOW you drive to how long you'll get in most cases....

32k is about right for front pad life on these trucks. they are 6000lb vehicles and they use the front brakes to stop most of that weight (70% front 30% rear). my 09 ram had 80k on the rear pads and they still had about 20k left, so expect to replace fronts every 30-40k and rears every 100k.

I don't know how some people burn through brakes, tires, etc so fast. My truck has nearly 75000 miles and has the stock brake pads and when I checked them a couple thousand miles ago back in april they probably have half their life or more left. The stock tires lasted about 35000 miles which is pretty good for the good years. The coopers I got after that are still on there and again probably have half the tread or more left. I do pretty much all city driving except a few long trips across the country once or twice a year, I haul a lot, I burn out and "race"(screw around) now and again. I don't beat my truck but I just don't see how I have the same pads as someone else and they last 2-3 times as long.

Either way, brake pads are about as easy as changing oil, just do it yourself. You'll learn how to do something new.
