Default Irritating 'Cheap Dynamo' Sound Which Follows Revs

Not sure how to explain this...

Last few days, when I turn on the ignition, there is a cheap hi pitch constant sound, very tinny, like an electric dynamo or something battery or electric motor sounding.

When I apply gas and accelarate, this tinny high pitched sound (from the engine) follows the rpm by entering a higher pitch, and then jumping down and increasing pitch again in sync with going through the gears.

It is really annoying the hell out of me as it makes my truck sound like a motorised milk float !

I have just given it some 'foot down' to see if I am losing any power/torque/acceleration but that is fine - just this damned 'dynamo' high pitched noise.

I have a stupid thought - could the battery be about to die ? I am on 22k km only and drive sensibly - I am in the Dubai heat. Any ideas ? SHould I change the battery anyway ?

As said - hard to explain but the net result is an engine that sounds cheap and electric !

cheers Graham

Could it be the engine fan spooling up and down? How hot is it outside? If the AC is on, the fan is lock-up right away so that could be it, that thing moves a ton of air, and you'll hear it.

The Rams are infamous for defective belt tensioners. I had this replaced on mine as well. It does cause a squealing noise that will fluctuate with engine speed. If you do a check on this forum I think you will see other threads regarding this issue. Hope this helps?

I had a similar sound. They replaced the clutch for the fan. Everything's good now.

I may be way off base here, but I've got to ask as you say that it's an electric whine type of thing...

It almost sounds like a ground loop whine associated with a bad ground on a stereo amp... did you recently install a new amp in your truck? If so you may need what is known as a "ground loop isolator" (you can google it and get it almost anywhere).

good luck and let us know how you make out

Hi Exco

No its not from a new amp - anyway I am sending the truck in this next few days and will revert - needless to say the dealer will somehow screw the fix (which sounds like it should be simple)...

cheers Graham
