Default I'm new and have a quick question

I see people taking about buying programmers for their trucks.. For example one guy said he put in a ” predator” chip. How much do these things cost and how do they benefit the truck?

A programmer (also known as a tuner) essentially reprograms the computer of your truck to give the engine more power and torque. It does this by changing the timing, fuel mapping, etc. Many of them also tune the transmission for better shift points as well. Depending on the tuner and what level of tune you're running you can be looking at around 30-40 HP and ft-lbs gains. You might see a small increase in MPG as well as your engine will be running more efficiently.

Many tuners also come with other features such as monitoring capabilities along with changing many other setting in the truck. Such as changing accessory delay times, high beam and fog lights on at the same time, traction control, DRL lights, seat belt chime, etc.

Oh ok thanks. Hard to believe that your mpg's can increase even tho your increasing hp. I would of thought fuel economy would decrease under these circumstances. Also, is there a way one could damage the truck by programming it wrong? Or are these devices user friendly and simple to install?

Well as long as you drive it nicely your MPG will increase. But most guys end up putting their foot into it a lot more once they have a tuner installed so obviously they aren't seeing that increase.

Yes there's definitely ways you can damage the truck.... Essentially you can wreck your computer and cause the truck not to start. That's worst case scenario though and there are ways to fix it. As long as you read the instructions carefully and do exactly what they say you will be perfectly fine. Installing it is not hard at all as long as you have everything set up right. Most of the companies have great tech support if you need any help as well.

And also remember the golden rule. Any time you take your truck in to the dealer for any kind of work, return your truck to the stock tune!! If they flash your computer with a tune installed you will have big problems.

No problem, that's what we're here for. It's definitely a good place to learn tons of stuff about your truck and all the mods you can do to it.

There are many out there that work great. I'm not as familiar with the tuners for 2007's as I've focused more on the 2011+ trucks. Both the Diablosport Trinity or Bully Dog GT are great options. The Trinity will allow for custom tuning capabilites (done by a computer programer; both Hemifever and Whitelightning are very popular) which is a nice option of you plan on doing lots of performance mods such as exhaust, intake, throttle body, cams, superchargers, etc. The Bully Dog is said to have better canned tunes though (meaning the tunes that come pre-loaded on the tuner). So if you just plan on doing an exhaust, intake and small mods and don't require custom tuning that would be a better option. There's also Superchips and Hypertech that make tuners for the 3rd gens. Unfortunately I don't know much about them as they are not available for 2011+ so I have no looked into them.

There are many threads written on tuners though. If you use the search function on the top bar of the forum you'll find tons of information to read through. I believe gonefishin776 is running the superchip tuner on his 2007. You could contact him and see what he thinks about it. It's always good to talk to guys and get their first hand experience with the set up.
