Default Downsizing Rims, Any recommended sizes?

Hey all, has anyone downsized from factory 20 inch wheels to an 18 or 17 inch rim? i've never been a fan of a big wheel, kind of like the smaller wheels. but i've been wondering if downsizing may not be feasible due to the size of the brake caliper or something else? if anyone has done this, can they post pics or the sizes of wheel and tire you're running? i'm very interested in a 17 or 18 inch wheel with a 33 or 35 inch tire.

You have to run at least a 17 inch wheel to fit over your brakes. But please think for a moment. I understand your statement about not being a fan of "big" wheels. But it is 2013 and times and styles change. When I was growing up in the 1980's and manufacturers started putting 16 inch wheels on high performance cars, they were considered "big". My friends and I considered 14 and 15 inch wheels normal and 13's were "small". No in 2013, it's 24 inch and larger wheels that are considered "big" while 20's and 22's are normal. I've heard my kids comment several times about the 17 and 18 inch wheels on some newer cars looking "tiny".

what he said is true, but running 17s will have many good benefits...

tires are cheaper, sizes are abundant

lighter wheels than the 20+

more sidewall/less likely to scratch

I'd go with 17s over 18s.

DoubleORam has captured my thoughts exactly. The tires are cheaper, more sidewall, and lighter wheels. With regard to times a changing, this is my personal style and flavor and I have given it considerable thought. So back to my original question, does anyone have pics of stepping down? I've seen a few folks with the 18 inch wheels, but I'm not sure if they went down.

hopefully fastNugly@discountautoperformance will chime in soon, I believe he stepped down from 20s to 18s and I remember a comment from him somewhere saying he had noticed a considerably smoother ride.

he would definitely be one to talk to, he's ran so many different wheel and tire combos on his truck LOL. shoot him a pm

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep cruising the pictures in the lifted section. I like a couple of wheel and tire combos I've seen and the prices are so much better on a 17 inch rim/tire combo.

Thanks for the call
But yes, I just stepped down to 18's as of last weekend and the ride is much more comfortable. Not saying 20's and 37's isnt, just that its noticeable with 18's
I stepped down, not for cost reasons (it was cheaper) but I wanted a new look and now like the more rubber look.
Plus I got 'I told you so' from my wife as well when she saw them on....LOL

Any questions, let me know

I'm torn right now on this dilemma. 35" MT's on a 17" wheel or a 35" MT on a 20" wheel!!

For all of you interested I dropped down from the factory 20’s to 17’s. I have had ZERO issues after making the switch and would do it again in a heartbeat, I saved just over $125 a corner vs 20's. The extra sidewall makes for a much nicer ride when off-road and I of course love the look… there’s just something about a meaty tire on a truck.

Here is a link to my thread where I did a little personal review and some photos for you to enjoy.
