My trans temp would get to 200* when towing my 9k trailer up the California mountains, I don't think anything will help keep temps low when climbing long grades with lots of weight. Try a one ton cooler, that will help some.

Yeah that's the only time my temps went sky high was on the extremely long steep grades. I ended up slowing down to holding 2nd and 3rd gear to crawl a little easier. I didn't want to do permanent damage to the drivetrain.

As far as I know all 4th gen v8 1500's have the exact same trans cooler. I don't know if a 2500 would fit.

Anyone who tows on a regular basis and still wants the benefit of a higher stall should really consider a triple disc converter.
Grant (catsltd) runs a 2600-2800 Circle D 258-mm triple on his work truck that regularly pulls a heavy trailer during the week, runs 13.6's on the weekends.
It costs almost twice as much as a base single disc, but the superior holding power means less heat and more power to the wheels under load.

Its the best converter on the market period.

I have 60,000 miles on mine now and I tow a tandem dump trailer 5 days a week with lots of 17,000 GVW loads.
Andre at Edge makes a great street converter, but Chris at Cirle-D has the best towing converter in my opinion.
I have run a 2600 Billet Edge on my 2003,and a 2600 Cirle-D in my 2010.

Great info thanks! TC is definitely next on the list. Is this the correct part?

How hard would this be to install with out a lift to work with?

^That's the one I have. Mine's a 2800 stall on my 4.7L(it was a 3000 rpm stall on the guy's modded hemi that I bought it from).

It's not an overly difficult job, but will take at least a few hours to do, and it is almost required to have a transmission jack and a buddy to help. I'm swapping mine out in a few weeks, I anticipate it taking me and my buddy about 3 hours. It took us about 6 IIRC the last time but we hadn't ever done it on this truck. Also, my exhaust is now rerouted to make trans removal easier, so that should save about 30 min on each end.

And this is all working in the driveway.

On my old 04 4.7 I would hold 1st gear at the limiter and do 25-30mph up a long grade, I'm surprized I never blew that thing up. I was pulling 8500lbs plus 1k in passengers and another 1k in the bed of ATV's and gear. I don't tow heavy often, but my 2800 single disk Circle D works great, you wouldn't even know its in there eccept that it takes off with less effort.

The biggest problem with pulling a load with a higher stall is getting the TC to lockup under load at 50mph+ speeds.

I know if I hit a strong headwind with my 2800 stall Edge
I cant hold OD or lock up the TC even on flat level ground
...and that's just a little RCSB with no load, no trailer. (3.55 gears)

I took a 800 mile road trip last Spring to Saskatchewan and my MPG was 13 or 14 because I was pushing against a headwind and reving at 3k most of the way. Trans hunting between 3rd and 4th all the way

..in normal conditions with no headwind in OD and TC lockup I rev at 1700 RPM at 65mph and get 22 mpg

I imagine it would be even worse for someone with a CQ pulling a trailer on the highway.

I wanted to have fun with my truck and be serious while I am towing it is my truck that makes money for meandre from edge told me to get a 2400 torque converter for pulling any higher will have hi trans heat with heavy loads is this true now I did installed it I don't feel that big of a difference so I think I should have got a 2600

From what I know, Edge is fine for non-towing applications,
and 2800-3000 is the sweet spot for a daily driver, weekend warrior
or go to a 3400+ for a mostly track truck that doesn't mind an little extra slip on the street.
(extra cooling with upgraded cooler and deep trans pan would be a good idea)

For a "Work" truck that tows/hauls a 2600-2800 Triple Disc from Circle D is the best!

a stock stall is 2300 so going to 2400 single disc, although better than stock is hardly worth the effort (IMHO)
