Question Got my new RAM. Also towing question.

I am the proud first time owner of both a truck and a RAM. I have a 2013 Outdoorsman, Hemi, 8 speed and I love it. One of the reasons for my choice is that it seemed like the best package for towing a trailer (towing package and 3.92 rear end). I currently have a hard top but plan on upgrading to a 25-30 ft travel trailer in the near future. Since getting it last week there have been people that tell me the truck cannot take the tongue weight due to no leaf springs only coil and I will need airbags. WTF, I bought it because it was equiped for towing. Is this true? I'd be interested in hearing other people's experiences in towing with the RAM.

I know there are a couple threads on this forum discussing the payload capacity of these trucks and WDH's (weight distribution hitches). My recommendation is to do some research on here before buying a trailer.

My personal experience with my '11 Outdoorsman is it pulls my 25 ft 5th wheel with ease. My dealer thought I might need air bags also but I never did install them because I didn't have any problems.

That said, hooking on to a bumper vs. a 5th wheel is much different and I think most guys on here with a trailer would recommend a WDH.

Oh yeah, and you gotta post some pictures! Helps those of us that are still waiting

This thread talks about payload capacity and WDHs in regards to the air suspension but has a lot of good general info in it as well.

The Ram is a very capable towing platform and will tow a good size trailer within the limits of the truck. As mentioned there are some good threads here that address payload, tow capacity etc. As with any tow vehicle there are limits you need to be aware of when searching for a trailer.

The first & best source for information with regards to your individual circumstances is the label inside your driver's door. It will say something like "The total weight of all passengers and cargo not to exceed XXX lbs". That weight on the label is for your weight + any passengers + in the cab + any cargo + the tongue weight of your trailer. Also, don't exceed the tow rating which will probably be between 9500 & 10500 lbs. You definitely have the engine & gearing for maximum towing. Just don't exceed the carrying capacity and you'll be fine.

Yep, like Explorer Rob says, check out the payload capacity sticker inside your door jamb. 99% of the time payload capacity is the limiting factor when trying to figure out what you can tow in the real world. Yours being an Outdoorsman is probably not too bad. 1300lbs maybe? Not sure. In any case, work the numbers backwards from payload and more than likely all the other values (GCWR, GVWR etc) will all be well under the max.

Don't buy into the hype (ie. 10,500lb tow ratings on the commercials). Where they find these heavy trailers with low tongue weights is a mystery to me!

I had a 2012 RAM 1500 Express QC (I've since sold it after ordering a 2013 1500 Big Horn QC with 3.95 rear end). When I hooked up my 27' travel trailer, to my 2012, the tongue weight on the receiver nearly bottomed out the coil suspension. I HAD to put air bags on my 2012 to level out my truck and to make towing safe. I anticipate the same issue on my new 2013 when it arrives and I already plan to install the same Air Lift system. It's quite inexpensive and easy to install.

I made sure to get the air ride. With my 30ft enclosed trailer there was too much weight on the old 2009. The 2013 Air ride no problems. Lifts it perfect.
