Default 3.92 vs 3.55

Okay I have finally found a truck that I love with every option on it I want (except one) at the price I am willing to pay. Only problem is that it is equipped with 3.92 gears. I am wanting 3.55's since I don't tow that much. Basically I am asking for you guys to chime in here let me know how much real world difference in fuel mileage I should expect. Obviously moy foot will big the biggest factor. Saleslady claims there wouldn't be a noticeable difference in fuel economy. Ummmm okay I grew up on a farm and wasn't born yesterday so lets hear it from the people that know.

Partially depends on what kind of driving you do and what you plan on doing to the truck. If you do mostly city driving and/or plan on putting bigger tires on it I'd definitely go with the 3.92's. If you do a lot of highway driving and plan on keeping a stock tire size then 3.55's will give you better economy. Even fully stock I doubt you'd see much of a difference in MPG. 1-2 max.

There is a reason why You hear of people changing out their 3:55 gears to 3:92s. You will like the Ram with 3:92s as I do. I had a Ram with 3:55 gears and hated that gear set.

Why did you hate your 3.55s my current truck is a gmc with 3.42s and I get along with it fine I am a 50/50 mix of city/highway with very little to no towing. Main reason is 2 guys I work with bought I dentical fords 3 months apart only difference is one had 3.55s other had 3.73s guy with 3.55's getting 2-3 mpg better obviously driving style had to come into play.

My 02 4.7 has the 3.92 and I cannot imagine it with 3.55 gearing. The 03 hemi has 355 and it does everything I need of it and more!

Any wind, hills would make the 2010 Ram with 3:55s hunt for gears. The constant down shifting drove me nuts. Never mind pulling anything. I am glad you are happy with the GMC. I rode with a buddy with the same set up as yours pulling a 18' boat. NOT impressed. I suppose the higher gears are ok if you live in a area where there is no wind or hills. And yes, the buddy with 3.73s is getting worse mpg cause he is having a lot more fun!

I didnt say I was happy with it just that I got along with it. I wouldn't hook onto an 18 foot boat with my truck unless I had to. And you mentioned fun that is my other concern my tire budget would probably literally go up in smoke with that low of a gear. I was just curious if it made that much difference either way I would bet both setups would do better on gas than my 06 gmc.

I have 3.92 gears in my Hemi Ram and still get great gas mileage (for a 390hp truck). Any really fast highway cruising I probably get a little bit worse than the 355 gears, but driving around 60mph, I am still getting over 20mpg.

difference would only be around 100-200rpm in OD and getting up to speed would sway in 3.92 favor.

Your gmc has a true 6 speed , where as ours is really a 4 speed with 2 overdrives. I have the 3.92's and am the weekend tower ( 25 foot travel trailer ). Not once have I ever thought I wish I had 3.55's over the 3.92's. Even for daily driving its nice to have.
