Default 4.7 engine overheating. HELP!!

I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 with the 4.7 it overheated today and spewed a Buchanan of coolant out of the cap. I replaced the thermostat and topped off the fluid, and bled the bleeder screw. I went for a drive and it overheated again I pulled over and bled the air out of the bleeder again and then let it cool down. Drove it home a few miles and it looked good until I parked then it started to rise again. Don't know what else to try if anyone can help or have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Have you checked to make sure your fan is working correctly? I'm not familiar with the 2002's but I'm assuming it has a thermoclutch fan. If that's not working you'll overheat constantly. Let your truck get up to operating temperature and see if the fan comes on fully. If not, that's your problem.

A number of things it could be. And when you stop the truck, your temp will naturally rise as the heat from the block heats up the now not circulating coolant, it's normal.

If your truck overheats quickly when you start out, your water pump is toast. The engine superheats the coolant around the cylinders without the circulation needed to move it away and replace it with cooler coolant from the radiator. This is usually accompanied by a bubbling/boiling sound.

A blown head gasket will also cause your truck to overheat with similar symptoms, do a compression test.

If it overheats after a reasonable amount of driving, it's possible your radiator is plugged, have it cleaned or replaced.

What type of coolant is in it has an effect, too. Rams use a HOAT (Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) long-life coolant. Use of other types of coolant WILL affect the efficiency of your cooling system. I use Zerex G-05 coolant, available at NAPA for about $16 a gallon. Expensive, but necessary (everything for these trucks is expensive). If you're not using a HOAT type coolant or aren't sure what's in it, after you do any repairs necessary, drain and flush your cooling system with distilled water (no minerals in it) and refill with the proper coolant. Your truck will be MUCH happier with it.
