With a 3.55 rear max tow is around 8500 lbs.

Check this section you posted in as it contains several posts about the information you are seeking. You can also go to the Ram site and it will have a section on towing limits.

Think the 3.92 tows 10,000 lbs so that's prob what your dealers referring to.

With the hemi and 8 spd the factory says .....

3:21 = 6550lbs tow rating
3:55 = 8700lbs tow rating
3:92 = 10,000lbs tow rating

The above is a general rule of thumb as every truck configuration can be slightly different depending on options

The above posted towing specs are pretty darn close, if not spot on. To make sure the best place to check is the sticker in the drivers door which also indicates the weight of your truck, gross vehicle weight etc. air pressure. The information on the sticker is specific to the build of your truck. When the dealer told you 10,000 pounds, either he did not know, telling you anything to make the sale or was confused. Generally the 10K rating is with the 3.92 gears.

I don't care what the specs say. I would never tow 10,000lbs with any 1500 pickup. I don't care what manufacturer. You may be able to pull 10,000lbs, but you cannot safely stop and control that much weight with the weight of a 1500 pickup.

If the trailer has good brakes sure you can.

Agreed. I'd sacrifice a bit of towing capability for ride comfort and mpg anyway. if you're doing serious towing, get a 1 ton.

When towing a fair load, trailer brakes are a must, or as OAG18 indicated stopping would be a real concern.

Don't think stopping a 10k load with a 1500 would be much different than stopping 30k load with a 3500, if done properly with trailer brakes and proper weight distribution shouldn't be a problem, although the op was just asking what the capacity was not saying he was hauling that much
