Default To Diesel or Not To Diesel that is the question!

Hey all, giving the new VM diesel serious consideration, but have some concerns, first I will be towing my boat (package weight around 2700lbs) and then you add in gear so probably not more than 3500lbs.

Will I see a drop in performance and mileage? I know it is not out there yet but from what the GC is reporting mileage is like 22/27.

Nothing really heavy to tow but dont want to be that guy on the road doing 35 in a 65 either

IMHO, a diesel is not needed for what you plan to tow, as the weight you quoted is well within the capability of a Hemi and you should have no problems towing on the higway at speed with a Hemi. I tow a TT in the same weight category you mentioned and the only limiting factor are my TT tires which have a maximum speed rating of 65 MPH, that and I prefer to keep my speed down to save on fuel. I recently towed my trailer up a long 6% grade and had no problems maintainig 65 mph and easily could have gone faster. The advantage the diesel will have is in better fuel mpg, but I would think, you will need to put on a lot of miles per year to compensate for the higher cost to purchase a diesel truck and the cost per gallon of fuel.

I wouldn't think the new diesel would have any problem towing that load and maintaing speed.

3500lbs is nothing for a HEMI truck. You dont really even need that, the 4.7 will do just fine with that load. As far as the new VM diesels go, theres no way to tell what mileage you will get while towing at this point, as they arent even out yet. I know Chrysler is hoping for 30mpg on the highway, but that will be without a load. If they can get good mpg while towing with this thing, they are going to make some very serious waves.

No reason to have a diesel for your intended load. I regularly tow more than that with my Hemi with ease. Even the new 6 would handle your needs. IMHO the only reason for a diesel truck these days is if you need the capabilities (i.e. torque). Otherwise the costs of the diesel don't make the sense they used to.

C'mon...admit it. You WANT a diesel. :P

Since all of the useful and practical responses have already been made for the NEEDS side of your brain, I figured I'd appeal to the WANTS side.

I personally have NO NEED for a diesel, having said that I plan on checking them out when they're released. If I like how the entire package is, the power output is acceptable using the butt dyno, and they're not priced out of sight, I may go for it on a '15 model year.

The problem is that I really like my current truck, and by then it'll be completely paid off and completely mine. It's going to be tough to decide.

I would hold off making the decision until you've had a chance to kick the tires so to speak. I think it's been well established that you don't NEED the diesel, so it's more of a WANT thing.

good luck

Exco

The VM diesel is a good motor. Once the American tuner folks get tuners for it, it should be very interesting. I could get into driving a Ram that hauls ass and gets 30 mpg!
