Default No throttle cable!! Any safeguards?

Anyone else feel a little uneasy with no throttle cable. I know, I know the chances are probably slim but what if..........!!

Feels kinda weird having a box and wires connected to the pedal and going to the computer for throttle rather than the good old fashioned cable.

I could always throw it in neutral if things went bad I guess. Does anyone know if any other safe guard is in place if something broke and she just decided to rip off on ya because something in that box behind the pedal malfunctioned??

there is atleast 2 safeguards for the system. I have been working with fly by wires since like 01ish. I am a tech by trade for a German car maker and WE have NO problems with it. In my 14 years as a tech I have prob replaced 2-3 TB and 1 or 2 eng harnesses due to resistance issues, but they are rare.

If it like most vehicle, fail safe will let you drive the vehicle but under reduced power and a max speed of about 30-40 mph. atleast you can get home. Electronic Tb is also to help in the traction department. if you have wheel slip the TB will close itself to reduce eng power to help you get traction.

I've had 2 vehicles that had issues with throttle control......and both had cables.

1 was a 86 Camaro IROC-Z where the throttle body stuck in mid position in bumper to bumper traffic, and the other was a 79 Ramcharger whose throttle cable broke in rush hour traffic around Jacksonville, FL and I was in the fast lane when it did.

How would any 'safeguard' have helped me ? Why would it be any different with fly by wire ??

I think there is 3 redundant safeguards on these things, not positive though. I've never had a problem with the wire throttle stuff. But I have had 2 throttle cables come unhooked from the carb.

Wow...excuse me then. I guess I was wrong by assuming you were asking what do you do when you lose throttle control......didn't think it really was any different (and still don't), as in either case, you are stuck with what you have...a lack of throttle control.

And if there really are safeguards in place, then it is even LESS dangerous than the situations I described, since those had NO safeguards.

but in my case, the cable broke and I was left with an engine in mid throttle, and I needed to stop. I almost put it into the jersey wall to avoid hitting anyone else (4wheel disc brakes weren't enough to even start to slow it down in time), since traffic was stopped/stopping, but was able to hit the offramp and put it in neutral and shut it down.

and I don't drink, nor do I abuse pets/animals........so no thanks.

Most of these systems are pretty similar and have 3 throttle positions for triple redundancy. Nearly impossible to have an uncontrollable TB.

If you happened to have an issue, turn the ignition off! I laughed when Toyotas had issues with the floor mats interfering with the gas pedal and people would be speeding down the highway out of control. Seems pretty logical to me to turn the engine off...
