Usually not a good idea to run a truck that has engine issues for that long at city and highway speeds and hope nothing will break or over heat or bend or get abused prematurely. Just that 3-4 hr time frame of issues could be the reason that this engine is dying prematurely. JMO
A lesson for ALL of us to learn....

I don't believe a tune or his mods has anything to do with this problem. And to Graygoose...no pun intended, if he had burned a hole in a piston oil would be forced out by compression through crankcase ventilation. You would see blue smoke from hell coming out the exhaust and oil being forced out of the filler cap hole...highly unlikely....ESPECIALLY half to full throttle. I would guess that if there is an oil burning and ticking problem it is from the valve train only. Could be a bent valve not closing or seating causing low compression. And the burning oil could be from the damaged valve guides. Even an idiot mechanic would know to look for rocker arm breakage, bent push rods, bad lifters. He says there's bad shaking when in 4 cylinder mode....lifter could be bad right there. In any case the valve train sounds like the culprit. And I would be kicking some dealers bunholes if it were my truck.....a 2012 truck...jeezem! They owe him a repair to say the least. They should stop with their dumb a$$ excuses and tear the engine down....PERIOD. There could be some other issues, but the valve train most likely caused them....my opinion.

pre detonation could cause that? the detonation could be caused by a faulty tune?
