Default Specific question about what the overload springs do

I know what the overloads springs are and more or less what they do but I have one specific question about them.

With a moderate load in the bed, say 400 pounds or so (more than a sheet of plywood but nowhere near max payload capacity), do the overload springs do anything? Specifically, do they help keep the rear from sagging under a moderate load like this?

I keep hearing that the OL springs do nothing unless you actually overload the truck but it seems to me that they would contribute to the spring rate and therefore keep the truck from sagging as much, even if the load isn't extremely heavy. Thoughts?

Generally speaking, an OL spring is "divorced" from the leaf spring pack and does nothing until there is a significant amount of weight in the bed, at which point the bottom leaf in the pack engages the OL spring, making it part of the pack and thusly increasing the spring rate/ load capacity. It is there so that you can have a decent ride and still be able to carry a heavy load when necessary. Removing it decreases the max load capacity by the amount the OL spring is rated for. It is not there to support an "overload" condition, it is an integral part of your max payload rating. Hope this helps.

They don't do anything with a load of 400#. I have no OL's and have carried more weight than that with no effects. It won't be noticeable unless you really load her down.

I guess a more specific question is this. If two identical trucks had the same load, one with stock OL springs in place and the other removed, would they both squat the same or would the one without the OL springs squat more?

Based on what you said above I would think they would squat the same up until the payload reached the weight at which the OL springs typically come into contact with the rest of the spring pack. And then any additional weight would cause the truck without OL springs to squat more because there is no OL to assist. Is that correct? If it is, here's the million dollar question. How much weight does it take to reach this point?

I don't know what point you would begin to notice the difference. What I do know is I pick up about 4-500# of mulch each spring and didn't notice a difference from a year with OL's to the next without the OL's.

IF u take them out and ever haul many decent sized loads later on u can flatten your leaf out like i did on mine. I took mine out when i flipped my leafs adn lowered it then i hauled a few good sized loads over a few months and after a while after that my truck started to flatten the pass leaf out and i had to swap it out bc one side set a few inches lower. So keep that in mind if u ever plan on hauling trailers or anything else later on that may need those

It's been a while and I actually decided to just leave them in. I would like to go a little lower but I don't want to risk any issues down the road so I'm not going to bother. It may be my imagination but it looks like my leaf springs are slightly misshapen anyway and I don't want to give it any reason to get worse. Thanks for the info!

The only difference if you removed them is the truck would sit lower(the thickness of the OL leaf). They don't do anything unless you are at the point of where you have enough weight in there to bend the other leafs to where they hit/rest on the OL leaf. The OL leaf is just a straight, thicker leaf that is a stopping point for the other leafs, so they don't over extend. Same concept as bump stops with coil spring suspension, has no effect if you remove them unless you overload it.

And most leaf's do get stressed and permanently bent from their original shape over time.

I know this is an older thread and I don't have any immediate plans to remove my OL springs but it interests me and it's still something I would consider eventually doing. That being said, Sean and anyone else interested in this thread please check out this thread that I started a while back. Not only does it have photos of my "misshapen" springs but my second post kinda explains my thoughts and questions on what the OL springs do or don't do for the rest of the spring pack. I'm not saying I'm right, just throwing those thoughts out there for conversation.

At this point, I'm very apprehensive about removing the OL springs and losing the support that they at least appear to give the rest of the spring pack. I have considered replacing my nine year old spring packs with new ones and then removing the OL springs but that's more $$$ and I still don't know if that's the answer.
