Default Clay Bar question

Is it a good idea to clay bar a new truck?

Hi, I've read that many have. Some have had to use the clay bar to get rid of RAIL Dust ..

I haven't done my truck yet, just got it last week. But I used the clay bar on the new car I got last year and it made a big difference. Took all the little bumps out of the finish and then I put on the wax and it looked great. I had started waxing before the clay bar and couldn't get a good shine, it kept showing those small bumps.

Depends on what shape your paint is in when you get it. If it's brand new out of the factory and hasn't been sitting on the lot I doubt it would need to be clay barred. If it's been sitting on a lot or has quite a bit of dust on it from transportation then it might need it. The best way to find out is to actually go out and inspect your paint. Look at it closely for imperfections and feel out smooth it is. If it's smooth then put a couple coats of wax on it and call it good. If not, clay bar it, polish it, then wax it. Lots of info on all that stuff in the washing and waxing section of the forum.

I think it was on the lot for about 3 weeks before I bought it.
I got it in Feb. and I have put a coat of wax on it. It is fairly smooth but not the slickness that a fly would slide on

It also sits in the garage a lot. Only put 1200 miles on it since I got it in Feb.
So I wasn't sure if it needed to be claybarred or not.

It's really up to you then. I can't really tell you if it needs to be done or not without seeing and feeling the truck in person you know? So if you feel like putting in the time to do it, it definitely isn't a bad idea. Smoother is always better. Once you clay bar, polish and put a couple coats of wax on it, it will be as smooth as can be!

I have been looking at the Meguiars clay kit. I may just try it and take your advice and put a couple coats of wax on it afterwards. BTY the color is Silver

If you're going to clay it, you might want to consider putting a coat of polish on prior to your coat of wax.

After you clay bar your truck and polish out any small scratches that were left by the clay bar, you might consider putting a good sealant on your truck before you put a couple coats of wax on it. The sealant will last a lot longer than the wax and will give you an excellent base for your wax. A good sealant will last about 6 months whereas a good wax will only last about 4-6 weeks, dependng on how much you wash your truck and on whether it sits outside or in a garage. You can always use a spray detailer after every time you wash your truck to keep it protected inbetween waxes. A lot of people use these steps: wash, clay bar, wash again, polish, seal then wax.
