Default Best mpg/power mods

Alright this is my first post on here but I'm wondering what can I do to my truck to get better mileage and make more power without spending a while lot of money on it I wrecked it a few months ago and just got it fixed this week so short on cash at the moment any help would be greatly appreciated!! So far I've got a k&n filter on the factory box and I've got a y pipe coming off the factory collector going into 2 10" glass packs plan on deleting the collector and having true duals what other mods have y'all done without spending a whole lot??

With my exhaust I'm planning on running a 2.5 from driver side to passenger side then down to a 2.25 and from the passenger side coming straight off the cat with a 2.25 and going back reason being I'm only running 2 8 inch cherry bomb glass packs just to keep the popping down a little and they have no back pressure ad with a mildly moded stock motor if you open it up to much it'll lose power I had this with my old truck by stepping down a 1/4 inch it'll give the right pressure yet still flow good reason for running the 2.5 from driver side then stepping down is so it will have the same flow even though there's more pipe both banks will have equal pressure keeps the flow up more an this way if I run an x pipe it won't hurt hp I have a friend who had 2.5 true duals all the way with an x pipe synonym said he had more power with stock exhaust believe it or not took the x pipe out and put 2.25 tubing in its place just to add pressure and he gain 29 hp over stock with the x pipe he was 18 hp less than stock this made no sense to me but an expert told me for an x pipe I work it has to be equal amount of pipe from each side other wise it'll create more pressure on one side than the other and you lose power but my way seems to be the best with flow and all it will equal out right have the same flow from each side so were gna dump it afterwards and see what kind of gains I get from it although it may have the scavenging sound I really don't care it's goin to run out in front of my back tire anyway so both tips will be side by side and it won't be noticeable this exhaust is going to run me about 160 bc I do all the work myself but before I go spending money on it I could use a few more pointers as to what would work good appreciate the help guys
