Default 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi sport edition blown up?

We bought this truck new in 2005, and now it currently has about 270k miles. The engine has always been well maintained, and used rotella synthetic oil since new.

Was driving home one day slowed down and turned onto our road, when we turned the corner something in the engine broke. When he stepped on the gas the engine sounded horrible, and would hardly run. He was able to make it back home, about 100 yards from where it happened.

The truck was running fine before, and it just happened all at once when it stepped on the gas.

Pulled the valve cover off to find a broken valve spring and spring retainer. Everything else looked fine though. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Would a new spring and retainer fix it or is there a chance that the valve hit the piston? We have not pulled the head off yet, only the valve cover.

Also, does anyone know of a place online to find the parts? Not really looking for anything modified, trying to keep it all stock. We plan to call the dealer if nothing shows up online.

You will probably have to pull the head to be sure, but you said there was a lot of noise and noise is bad. Rock Auto has good prices for parts, but at 270k miles after you check the piston you may be in for a complete rebuild or a lower mileage different engine from a wrecked truck. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Well, our first idea was to just replace the engine. But really couldn't find a good one for less than $2500.

Hemi's do claim a pretty good price point.

I did a HEMI swap into my 4.7 because the 4.7 was more expensive(engine wise). You might try http://www.car-part.com/

Some are as cheap at the 1500 range. You might find a "recycler" near you that has it less(Mine was 1800 for an engine with 40,000 miles on it)

From the sound of it, you dropped a valve. You might get away with rebuilding the one you have(not a bad idea with the number of miles you have), IF after removing the head, you see no damage to the cylinder wall. Chances are though, the thing is toast, and it's probably cheaper to get a used one than to rebuilt that one.

symptoms you show sounds exactly like that...I would pull the heads to change the springs...you can tell if you have any piston/valve problems...if not, at worst, your out spring cost and oil and coolant change..

I think you got luck and only ran the motor for 100 yards...spring swap maybe all you need..

to play it safe...since you have an 04 (03's an 04's were known to have bad springs), I would swap all the springs out..

Default Engine Guy

Contact this guy -
www.marksengineshopllc.com

He did an engine swap for me in January. He's a good guy and I got a 4.7 (he does hemis too) completely rebuilt and installed for $2800. Easily $1000 cheaper than anyone else I talked to - and $6000 cheaper than the dealership quoted me.
