Question Replacing Heads on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

I have a question about finishing head replacement on 5.9l. The service manual and Chilton's both reference a "V8" mark to line up with TDC on timing chain cover. I looked all over the flywheel for this mark and saw no "V8" anywhere. Am I missing something obvious? I see other score marks but there are no markings on them. I only see the numbers for the different cylinders. Help please?

You're throwing me off a little here.

You're talking about a "V8" mark on the timing cover, and then you reference the flywheel. Two completely different sides of the fence.

The timing chain and gears get lined up like this:


The Crank-shaft has a key-way in it for the Harmonic balancer. The harmonic balancer gets slid on after placing the timing cover back on.

On the harmonic balancer there is a small groove from front to back that is supposed to line up with the timing tag on the timing cover at TDC.



The second image isn't exact but is the correct concept.

Now, are you pulling my leg? Because I don't see at this point what replacing the heads has to do with the timing.

okay the idea is to crank the engine by hand until the "V8" mark on balancer (please pardon my previous wrong reference), to ensure proper valve to piston clearance when installing push rods and rocker arms. I found a picture on a different forum that shows me where the mark should be, near the big balancer timing mark. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes. Turn the engine by hand so that #1 piston is at it's apex. Check that the Harmonic Balancer is at TDC. This is to ensure the engine is not 180 degrees out of timing. If you aren't absolutely sure you have it right, you can also remove the dist cap and make sure it's pointing at #1 and NOT#6.

#1 all the way up.
HB aligned with the timing tab @ TDC.
Rotor facing #1.
