Default Mirror question

For you guys with the chrome mirrors, is the Chrome just a shell? In other words, I have an opportunity to buy power lighted mirrors, and I want the chrome on them. I know there's an upgrade where I can just put the Kroschel on, but I'm wondering if that's the way the OEM did it as well, or if the outershell in the OEM mirrors is an actual backing and not just an overlay.
