Default Getting familiar with the truck

As i just bought my first ram with a blown engine, it is time for me to get more familiar with it. what i like about the engine is how it can shut off cylinder for fuel economy, but i hate how it takes 2 spark plugs per cylinder... the truck is really nice black with chrome, only problem with the exterior is that some r-tard spray canned half of the tailgate with flat black paint that has runs everywhere. The first day i got it i wanted to know what was wrong with it. when i started it, the engine started squealing really loud. my dads friend (mechanic) said the main crank bearing was gone along with the connecting rod-crank bearing. i took off the oil pan (pain in the ass to get off as you have to unbolt the differential so you can jack up the engine so theirs clearance to pull it out). when i looked in the oil pan there was shards of metal everywhere. took off the bottom of the connecting rods found that the bearing were all chewed up. guessing the previous owner ran it without oil either way if i wanted to rebuild the engine or swap it, the old one has to come out. so thats what i did, pulled the whole thing out by myself. all i can say is that rusted bolts are a pain in the ass put the engine on the stand and found that the crank is done for and it needs four new rods, at this rate i think im gonna have to put in a new engine instead of rebuilding it.

new or rebuilt engine is in your future for sure
by the time you replace the crankshaft, inserts, wrist pins, clean up the cylinder walls & cross hatch them, replace the rings & do the heads
you have spent the same money for rebuilding as you would for a rebuilt engine

the MDS 4 cylinder function was first used in 2006 in the dodge Rams & is still in use today in the 1500 model
the 2500 & 3500 model Ram engines never had MDS, because they usually need all 8 cylinders running all the time, because they are a work truck, not a pleasure vehicle

Good Luck

Congrats on the truck, cool your doing all this work yourself, if ever you think you have time, take your phone and grab some pics of what your doing, I am sure (myself included) many members would love to see your work, but if not, no worries, keep us posted on how things are coming along.

Yes, as GTyankee says, new engine time. How many miles on the truck? Sounds like the previous owner beat the ball bag off of it. Any other problems?

The new engine is the one where i had taken the oil pan off of, just wanted to see if anything was wrong. the next couple of days is going to be me grinding off of all the rust in the engine bay then painting it.
