Default oil change interval ?

first oil change was at 2700 miles in May. I drove across the country, ca to nj via S. Dakota. At 5500 miles on the odometer the oil change msg comes up. ( not even 3000 miles) Doesn't sound right to me. any thoughts anyone?

I'm pretty certain the EVIC's oil change message is based on driving conditions as opposed to mileage accumulated.

If you're not running synthetic, then I would go ahead and change the oil and reset the reminder. Conventional or synthetic oil and/or brand is your choice.

If you're running [fully, true] synthetic, you can just reset the oil reminder and run it for another 2-3K miles.

Many here, myself included, who run synthetic ignore the oil message reminder and change the oil/filter at a given mileage.

Good luck.

What Grubrunner said. I changed my oil at 500 and 1,000 miles and at the 1K mark, I filled with synthetic. After changing the oil, I did the reset. During a recent long camping trip, I received a change oil message at 3800 miles, so I just reset it.

My dealer told me to change mine every 5k miles. thats what they recommend. I think the manual says every 6-7500 miles or so.

The user manual and Chrysler recommends every 8K mile for oil change.
