Default How long before I can tow?

I just regeared to 4.56 today and I was wondering what y'all thought about how long before I can tow about 6k lbs? The gears I bought say "Drive easy for 500 miles, no towing for extended periods." I have to go pick up a car about 1000 miles away, should I be ok after the 500 mile break-in or should I go a little further than that. I know I'm going to get as many different answers as replies, but like I said, just looking for opinions

You should be good to go after the 500 mile initial break in, just do push it within those 500 miles.

People don't usually wait at all if they tow trailers for a living, when I rebuilt the rear end in my GMC2500, I waited 10 miles before I hooked up my concrete pump (5500lbs), drove it for an additional 30k miles with no problems...

You're talking metal-on-metal. Before roller cams went mainstream in production engines, it was the same deal for camshafts, and still is in older engines. Twenty minute break-in with no load, then let 'er rip. The break in time has to do with establishing the initial wear pattern and getting the surface worn to a nice polish and all the metal exchange has taken place.

I would wait 500 miles, per the instructions with your gears. Why risk the expense you made on re-gearing?

I wasn't asking if I needed the 500 mile break-in, I was wondering if 500 miles was enough to start towing. I wouldn't risk not breaking them in at all, weather or not it is really needed, better safe than sorry.

I am fairly certain that he was just using the break-in procedures for solid lifters as an example to show how metal on metal should be broke in

As you said, the car is 1,000 miles away, I'm sure she'll be fine by the time you get there.

To be honest, I dont know why you have to wait to tow from a gear change

if installed properly and filled with fluid you are fine....
