Default MPG after Flowmaster 40, K&N FIPK, TB cleaned, etc

Hello, I just purchased a Sunburst Orange Pearl 2009 Ram SLT 1500 4x4, 5.7 Hemi, on July 3rd and I absolutely love it. I upgraded from a little 5 cylinder Chevy Colorado...wow, what a horsepower upgrade.

To make a long story short I became addicted to driving around and checking my mpg. So, me being a teacher, I thought I would run a few experiments.

I decided to drive 30 miles on interstate at 65mph and check the mpg before and after all my new mods. I tried to accelerate the same, used cruise control, and same temp/time of day as well. I reset the MPG before and after each trip.

1) I peaked at 17.1 with no mods to the truck
2) I peaked 17.3 with a Flowmaster Super 40 installed (welded in, factory pipes, with resonator still installed)
3) I peaked at 19.9 with flowmaster, K&N FIPK ('cold' air intake), throttle body cleaned, Seafoam in the tank.

I was shocked how much increase in mpg I had. I was going to just install the air intake and not clean TB and Seafoam at first ,but I got eager to just get it all done.

I have spent several hours a day reading this forum. There is some great information here. I will install the 'under $100" car starter and also a new sound system. I just wish the stereo adapter wasn't so expensive.

Also, I read probably over 100 pages of the Flowmaster vs Magnaflow exhaust debate, but still couldn't make up my mind. So I had an appointment at the muffler shop to have a new muffler welded on. The shop carried both Magaflow and Flowmaster, so I had to choose when I got there. I knew that I wanted Flowmaster 40/44 series or either a 14" Magnaflow. When I got to the stop the owner stated that they actually ran out of Magnaflow and only had Flowmaster to install. So this is how I ended up with Flowmaster. He told me it would be very very loud and that I needed to keep my resonator. To make a long story short, I was expecting the exhaust to be much louder than it actually was. I dont hear it all when the MDS kicks in, almost no drone, but does get loud when I stomp it (these are positives I guess...lol). So I have been debating to have the resonator cut off. So I just installed the air intake today, and hold crap, the exhaust came alive. The exhaust has much more rumble and really gets especially loud when I stomp it. I am very happy with my exhaust after it is all said and done.

Have a great day

Hello teacher, I.E: My worst enemy 6 years ago ^_^ Interesting experiment man. I noticed a decent upgrade when I did my flowmaster american thunder/ k&n cai upgrade myself. If you want even more i suggest getting a handheld tuner.

I have been doing a lot of reading about tuners. What is best tuner for performance/mpg that doesn't cost too much?

congrats on the new truck. love that color. just be aware that some have had problems with tuners and engine ping. do a search then decide if you want to go that route.

I ended up buying a Diablo Predator tuner for my Hemi. I stuck with the canned tune for 89 octane and only changed the tire size. At first I was disappointed in the lack of difference I felt after tuning. I ran across several posts with people stating to give it a few days. To make a long story short, after a few days I noticed a major difference in shifting, acceleration, and my mpg is about +1 from before. I am very pleased with how everything turned out.

I am now starting to use my laptop to look at real-time monitoring using the Predator as well.
