I just thought I'd give my own personal experience about gearing to 4.56 with 285's. I searched and found many different pro's and cons to this combo. I finally decided to go for it and these are my results. Gobs more power, pulling a trailer is now enjoyable. RPM's sit at a nice 2250 going at 70 MPH. Here is where most people will say you can watch your gas guage going down. Things couldn't be any farther from the truth. I went from 12-13 mpg highway with the stock 3.55's all the way up to 17.9 mpg highway with the 4.56 and 285's. In summary 285's with 4.56 gears gets you more power and much better fuel economy.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention that the 17.9 mpg IS a corrected value, the uncorrected value was 22.13 mpg

Yes it is a 4X4, I ordered the gears and install kit from summit cost about $350 and my local shops quoted me anywhere from 450-700 to install them. Right around $800 per axle when all was said and done.

hmmm. wonder if i can pull a favor with my local transmisson/diff. shop. i send them a lot of transmission rebuilding work.

4:56's with a hemi would be quite a hot rod. I suspect the hemis would do better with those gears as well. I've got 3:92's and can't keep rear tires on now.
