Chrysler is rolling out its 6.4L HEMI V8 engine for the Ram brand for the 2014 model year. Rated at 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, the 6.4L motor will be the most powerful gas engine offered in the segment.

The 6.4L HEMI will be optional on Ram HD 2500 and 3500 models, including single- and dual-rear wheel setups. The big-displacement V8 will be mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 6.4L V8 option will carry a $1,495 premium over Ram's 5.7L HEMI V8 engine.

They need an RT Ram with a 392 period. The 2500 392 is going to be for the extra torque/pulling only. Don't know why they lowered the 392 torque numbers so much but that's Chrysler's dumb a$$ knowledge of performance for you. And don't give me any of this emissions bs, it's all about the cost of warranty repairs.

Agreed, Lets call it for what it is, the smokenmirror talk is getting old LOL...its a friggin NEUTERED 6.4 mated to a 6 speed glass tranny, gotta be kiddin me Mopar, then again it makes senseHOpefully by the time it gets trickled down to the 1500 or RCSB preferred, it will grow some ballz and mated to an 8 speed. Until customers doesn't complain and really tell what it is..nothing will change

Probably a smaller profile cam as well. The lower CR would be good for super charging but who would want to do that on this truck? Hopefully it is the same bore and stroke and just seriously detuned. Still, it's hard to believe they did this to us. The only good thing would be pulling power. At the same time they lowered the torque so much I can't see it being much better than the 5.7 but who knows?

with the 2500 Ram getting a larger block
are they also going to cripple it with MDS, which uses a different camshaft ???

The 6.4 may "on paper" be marginally more powerful, but, I guarantee it will feel and perform quite a bit better. It's like in the '80s and early '90s, the big block had barely more horse power, but could pull like a freight train.

As an example, 1993 GM 5.7L 210hp and the 7.4L 230hp, yes there's a bigger torque difference than the 5.7 vs. 6.4, but the 6.4 will be a better work truck motor...

Ive read that it will have MDS in the automatics, not manual trannys. Supposedly they are working on a new SRT motor for 2014-15' chargers/challengers, jeeps..supercharged (Apache 6.4) estimated 650hp. So eventually they will have to bump the power #s up on these 6.4 truck motors just in time for the 1500s

They are designing it as a truck first, and sports car second. Especially being a HD truck. You're only comparing peak power and torque numbers, the bigger engine will make substantially more torque at low rpm's than the 5.7L. It will be a better choice for towing.

Do you guys think the people designing these vehicles are custom making them for YOU? They design them for what most people want. In a HD pickup, it's towing.

I'd be extremely surprised if the 8 speed ever made it into the HD trucks. The HD trucks have a GREAT 6 speed trans, no need to make a switch. They utilize the 66rfe (different than the 6 speed in the 1/2 ton pickups, which isn't a terrible transmission but that's a whole different topic).
