Default 1980's Dodge Ram and other truck ads

Picked up a box of 1980's popular mechanics magazines from a garage sale recently.

Here are some ram and other truck ads.

Interesting tidbits:

Before they made their own small pick ups, the big 3 imported them from japan. All came with 4 cylinder engines.

Ram 50 was a Mitsubishi
Chevy luv was an Isuzu
Ford courier was a mazda

The ford ranger was the first true American small pickup(the chevy s10/gmc s15 beat it to market but it was just another Isuzu with a chevy 2.8l v6 option.

There were at least 2 fwd pickups, the dodge rampage (based on the 1980's dodge charger 4 cylinder sports car), and the vw pickup (it was actually called that!)

We complain about 3.21 or 3.55 axle ratios, how bout a 2.94 axle ratio with a slant 6 engine on the ram? lol Fords was worse at 2.47!!!

Trucks had a base price of under $6000

Don't believe the fuel mileage ratings, they were horribly inaccurate, take about 10 mpg off of each number and it would be closer to real world mileage.

This is a summary of the article on the 1982 ford ranger.
the 1982 ford ranger had a 73 hp 2.0l base engine and optional 2.3l 80 hp!!! 0 - 60 times were...wait for it....cause it took a long time to get there, 18 seconds and 16 seconds!! payload was 1200 lbs and optionally 1600 lbs which is really good for a small pick up even today.

This is all from the january 1982 issue of popular mechanics.

Let me know if you want me to continue, I could scan/summarize a few issues a week.

I had one of those VW's. it was a diesel an managed 45 MPG. I wouldn't mind having one of those as a second vehicle again.

Isn't it incredible how trucks used to get BETTER gas mileage!?!?!? I thought the EPA was supposed to help! lol

I have an 81 F100 with a 300cid inline six with a 3 speed auto(no overdrive) and it got very close to 20mpg avg. Nowadays it's hard to get that with a 6 speed transmission, more technology, lighter vehicle, etc...

The Brats were cool. I did always wonder though, why they never put the 5 speed manual that you could get in the wagons, sedans, and hatchback versions of the vehicle. All Brats were either 4 speed manual or autos. One thing that I did want to do at one time was to yank an XT6 engine and tranny out of a wrecked XT6, and stuff it in a Brat.

I remember when I was in highschool a guy had a yellow one with a big black decal that said brat. No offence but you will never see me in one. Lol

Yep, I remember all of these 3 small trucks. My Dad bought a brand new Ram 50 in about 80 or 81. Was a nice riding little truck but what a crap Mitsu engine. It had starting problems from almost day 1 and caused him nothing but grief. None of the
Dodge Mechanics could ever figure out why it was hard to start - something wrong with the carb. He ended up getting his money back and buying a full size Dodge truck with the tried and true 318.
