Default Rotary Shift Selector

For you newer Ram owners with the rotary shift selector, how do you like it? I've not driven one equipped that way, but I think I'd prefer the old lever select any day. I realize that there already many button and knob functions located on the dash, but I wish Ram had not gone that route with the gear selector. Was there some real advantage for doing so, or was it just a styling thing?

Takes some getting used to. I still reach for a shifter. As I understand it, it gets rid of an un-needed mechanical interface to the transmission. The 8 speed is an electronic transmission and has no mechanical linkage.

I like it, looks great. And it's out of the way, took a little getting used to but it's easy. I am happy mine has it, I don't miss. The shifter at all.

I have to say I was indifferent when I was looking for mine, but in the end I'm quite happy I got it.

As stated above, you do tend to reach for a shifter a few times, but with a little brain training it will be fine.

Having the rotary shifter vs the floor mount, is that it frees up more space for you to cary more junk with the improved console you get.

The funny part is the two things that I wasn't overly worried about getting, turned out to be my favourite things.......(Ramboxes being the other).

it belongs in a sports car, like a Fiat Spyder
That would be my first MOD, either push buttons or a mini shifter

Its not bad to get used to and I dont mind it.One thing I did notice is when you come out of a car wash, you need to step on the brake to shift from neutral to drive.

I didn't like the old console mounted shifter, it took up a lot of space and I didn't care for having to wiggle it from side to side while shifting it back and forth. I preferred the column shifter on the older models. The rotary shifter doesn't waste unnecessary space and is really simple to use, I think people make it out to be a much larger issue than it actually is. Once you get used to it you won't miss the old design.

I've had my truck for a week now and am already used to reaching for the knob and not a shifter. I love having the center console clear for storage, and no shifter on the column to reach around. Probably just a style decision to make it a knob - they just as easily could have made it a push button, slide switch, etc.

I had a 62 Dodge Dart wagon with the old push button trans. It was really odd, as it was on the left side of the steering column, on the dash.
