I saw an old Ford Edsel at a car show with the pushbuttons for the shifter, and they were located in the center of the steering wheel where the horn button would normally go. Any imaginative types here with the picture of someone smashing those buttong when they wanted to honk their horn?

As for the OP, I test drove an 8 speed/HEMI combo and did not mind the rotary shift knob at all.

I too remember seeing old Dodge or Plymouth autos with the push buttons as well as one model with a tiny dash mounted lever, but somehow, in my mind at least, this still seems like a throwback to the 50's and 60's. I can understand now about the new electronic interface though. Guess I'll just have to accept it when time to trade comes.

I think it was DeSoto that originally had the push buttons in the 50's. I also think it was DeSoto that had a model with the shifter mounted in the dash. A handle that stuck out into the passenger compartment. Sorta like a floor shifter mounted in the dash. Being in the prior seat belt era I wouldn't want to be sitting in the front in a front end crash.

Don't know about other manufactures predating Chrysler but I am sure it is possible.

According to the Ram website since the 8 speed is electronically controlled there is no physical linkage hence the rotary shifter knob.

Paddle shifters would go hand in hand with the rotary shift knob but that would cost too much money for cheepy Chrysler. Sooner or later Ram Ceo's slow moving brain will catch on and add it as an option. Unfortunately they will probably charge you extra for their newly patent design they discovered from some dumba$$ on the forums

So were the 4,5, and 6 speeds. RFE stands for Rear wheel drive, Fully Electronic.

I've had it for about a week. I still grab for the column shifter from time to time. But I really like it.

It does take a little getting used to. I find myself reaching for the volume knob since it's right next to it. Especially if I'm in a hurry. Doh!
