I would not rely on the dealer for this - find an expert powder coater in your area and take it directly to them. They should know in an instant what needs to be done for prep, or what can't be done.

They might also have some specialty options that might help you. It has been a few years since I dealt with paint processes, but I did find a electrostatic Teflon based spray years ago that might be good for side steps. It looked like black powercoat, but nothing would stick to it. We didn't end up using it since we had to silkscreen on top of the finish and that would not adhere. Pretty sure it would be quite easy to wash off mud and bugs - not sure on the durability though.

If you already have stainless on hand, it will probably be cheaper and less hassle to paint them vs. buying new and trying to sell the old - or do what I would probably do and let them sit in the garage gathering dust. Most black ones I have seen are also carbon steel, so rust is still a threat.

Why not just use linex with the premium coat to prevent fading?

I was planning on having them color matched to my matte black rims, which is why i didn't get the black ones. I also thought stainless would be more durable and the dealer said powder coating would not be a big deal. The dealer uses an "expert" powder coater in the area and this is not the first stainless steel part they have tried to powder coat. There must be something about the finish of the steps that they haven't encountered before. I guess i will just take them to another shop and see what they can do with them. If that fails then i thought about Line-X but i would prefer a smooth/paint looking finish.

I gotcha. I'm sure its possible. Maybe a quick sandblast before the powder coat like someone else said. Are the w2w the same material as the cab length? They call mine chrome tubular side steps but they don't look like the ones I had on my 2011. I like them 10x more than the old ones. I like how the step pad goes all the way across versus having a seperate pad for each door.

I think the w2w are only available in stainless steel, but not 100% sure on that.

Put a magnet against it. If it sticks it is carbon steel with chrome plating. If it does not stick it is stainless.
