my 04 3500 had the 6 speed manual, "start off in second" and the 3.73 rear. perfect combo imho.

Hanv't look at the ratio yet, but my friend has a 07 mega cab 1 ton 5.9 6spd manual. First gear is useless. I pull her horese trailer (unloaded is 12k) with 4 horses (2k avg each) and putting it in first letting out on clutch the truck moves on its own. no gas pedal movement needed. When i pull it empty I use 2nd to start off in. 1st is gear way low. It was bought in Texas and prob has (gonna guess) 4.10.

Her step son has a similar truck except 4x4 and his turns about 300 rpms less at 70 mph. PLUS it dont pull as good.

I would venture to say most (70% in my area) of the 3/4 diesel trucks are used just for show, they never have a trialer hooked to them where they need a diesel anyway. SO having a higher gear will net better mpg with a 800ft lb tq monster.

02325.. that low gear..."granny gear" helps getting loads to move and takes a lot of strain off the clutch and trans. if i was towing a 12000 pound trailer, i would make use of that first gear.
