I've come up with a complaint about the 8 speed, when your at WOT the shifts are way too soft and there is a lot of lag between shifts

Mine seems to short shift also and does the engine brake thing when slowing. 8 speed & 3.55, Hemi.

Mine does too and same set up as you. Now I got radio issues, screen went completely black and won't turn on. First time I clicked the nav button and it completely froze up. Oh boy, here we go.

That isn't the behavior I am seeing. At WOT the tranny shifts fast, but smooth, at redline.

I think so, I remembering reading that the eight speed tranny has to learn its shifting behaviors. Likely the reason my salesperson told me to do several WOT from the mid 30 MPH range.

It's not about so many more "gears to go through." It is all about keeping the RPM's down by utilizing the additional numerically lower ratios available. First gear can be numerically higher for more torque multiplication and the closer ratio spread (from more gears) makes shifting feel much smoother. This low RPM results in lower internal engine friction and lower fuel consumption. The trans will upshift as rapidly as possible with a given load or demand. Having a numerically lower effective ratio due to the 8th gear O.D. ratio also results in less engine wear.
I drove my neighbor's 7 speed Mercedes and it behaved in an identical rapid upshift fashion.
