Default *** who ever figures this out is a genius truck wont start***

so i have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 318ci v8 with a 1997 dodge ram 1500 318ci engine no big differance aside from a few different connectors but thats not the problem

heres the problem basicly when i replaced the engine with the one out of the 1997 that had 81k miles on it initially it wouldnt start then all of a sudden it fired up found it kind of weird but what did i care it ran then just recently truck was running fine but i figured id replace the pcv valve spark plugs and do an oil change with synthetic oil and lucas synthetic oil stabilizer but when i was done replacing everything it wouldnt start then all of a sudden again fired right up and ran fine until today for the past 6 hours ive been screwing around testing all sorts of things to figure it out but it just wont start any help or questions would be great the sooner the better cause i need to go to school tomorrow and i cant miss any more or else im getting dropped so like i said the sooner the better cause i gotta figure this out tonight

THINGS TO NOTE: its getting spark and the spark plugs are pre gapped platnium plugs. 2 plugs and wires were not removed due to their location which rules out a bad set of plugs. i put on a brand new ignition coil and nothing changed. its getting fuel it just wont combust not even with starting fluid and there is pressure in the fuel rail.

im thinking the crank shaft positioning sensor but this is my first dodge ive owned

thank you my name is brondon feel free to call me any time 951 427 O831 or email me brondondolon@gmail.com or just post on here which ever is quickest for you

did you make sure all of the wires are ran to the correct plugs? never hurts to check it again.

are the plugs correct?

I would try swapping old parts back.

What plugs are you running?

does it turn over?

need more info.

@danny

all the connections are fine i spent all day trying to figure it out and the connections are one thing i went over and over and over again

the plugs are autolite platnium plugs which doesnt really make me think they would be the cause of the problem cause they are all getting spark and there are 2 plugs and wires i didnt even touch so with that said it should at least fire up some what

the truck cranks so the starter is good it just doesnt fire nothing not with anything

but like i said it ran fine and then after i replaced the spark plugs it wouldnt start but then it fired right up ran good and then when i got out of class it just wouldnt fire up

one thing i should add though is it did this before when i first replaced the engine with the new one out of the 97 ram but after that initial time it happened it didnt do it again till now

thank you for all your replies and help i appreciate it

i second the thaught on the crank sensor, to me it screams CPS. that is a symptom of one going bad.

could it possibly be the CAM position sensor? or did those years not have em yet...

i was thinking, Crank PS, Cam PS, ECM, Ignition circuit (like in the column... I've seen it happen where you jiggle the key or cylinder assembly and the truck starts).. hmmmm

good luck tho.

yea all the second gens had em, the cam sensor is unlikely compared to the crank sensor.

Have you scanned the PCM? Did you check fuel pressure/volume? What about an injector pulse? The CKP sensor could be bad without throwing a code so you either have to check it with a lab scope or blindly throw a new one at it with the hope it fixes it.
