Default If it wern't for bad luck....

I took our truck grocery shopping today. Rolled the tonneau cover back to put the cold stuff in the cooler as we live about 45 minutes from the store. As I was about done the wife yells the truck is on fire. I look up and the tonneau cover is smoking like crazy, I unroll it real fast
it quits smoking and has two holes melted in it. I roll it back up to finish loading the cooler and it starts smoking again. Only thing I can figure out is I have an 8 spoke chrome clad wheel that matches the rest of the wheels on my truck for a spare in the truck bed and the sun reflecting off it like a magnifying glass melted the holes in the cover. Going to need a new cover.

WOW! That really does suck. Sorry to hear that, Dood.
Sounds like it's time to put some Plasti-Dip on your wheels so they don't burn a whole somewhere else.

First thing I did when I got home was throw a rug over that spare so it wouldn't happen again.

He mentioned his was in the bed. Judging by the way my chrome wheels reflect the sun while mounted on the truck, I can only imagine the reflectivity it would have lying horizontal in his bed!

Probably not. The ignition temperature for dry grass in low humidity is over 400 degrees (f) 204 degrees (C) for you crazy canucks. The reflection from the wheel was probably no more than 200 (F) 93 (C). Enough to cause some melting and smoke from the plastic tonneau cover, but not enough to cause ignition.

I have a Truxedo cover on my truck. However I don't that has anything to do with what happened. Since the spare won't fit under the truck I have had it in the bed for over a year and have rolled and unrolled the cover countless times with no problems. As they say this time all the stars had to be in perfect alignment for it to happen. The sun had to be at the right angle, the cover at the right spot over spare and dumba$$ me putting the cover back in the same place the second time.
