Default Backup camera with tailgate removed???

I run with a camper loaded in the back of my truck and the tailgate removed sometimes. Is it possible to purchase a separate camera and mount it above the rear bumper, then simply plug in the oem wiring? Obviously when I remove the tailgate, I remove the rear camera.

Having a camera that works with the camper loaded would sure be handy.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure if you can get the camera as a separated item. you have to check with a Chrysler parts site and see if you can get it, but I don't see why you could not do it.

Just buy the wireless camera setup from Peak. It goes on your license plate bracket and camera sticks to your windshield like a gps screen. Worth a try.

the camera usually comes as a kit
tailgate handle
camera
4 or 5 piece wiring harness, i don't for sure

on mine i seem to remember a short pigtail that plugs into the camera
the next pigtail goes from there to just below the tailgate
the next one goes from there to just forward of the left side of the spare tire
the next goes from there to somewhere near the firewall
then i believe the last one goes from there to the back of the radio

If you made a different mount than the tailgate handle for the camera
then used just a couple of the rear pigtails
you could then put the campers camera anywhere that you wish, even above the door
then plug the new camera wiring into the original connector where it first goes under the bed, by the rear license plate. The same connector that you have to unplug when you want to remove the tailgate

It should work in theory & you might recover some money by selling what parts that you don't use
