Default How do you like your Ram's1500 Air Suspension

Thinking about getting the air suspension on a new Ram 1500. For those that have it how do you like it. Pro's? Cons?

Only have 1500 miles on mine but love the air ride. Very smooth! Would get it again in a heart beat.

After 9,500 miles, I've come to realize if I had it to do over again I would not buy a Ram without the air suspension. While others have said there's no difference in the ride, when test driving before purchase my "butt-test" comparison convinced me otherwise. The ride is superb; empty or with a heavy load. It showed me its worth on a 5,000 mile trip towing a 4,500 lb camper. Lowering to entry/exit eases my mind going into certain parking structures. Plus, my (short) wife no longer accuses me of "playing with my toy" when I lower it to entry/exit mode to help her get in - rather I get thanks... That's not available with the standard suspension!!!

Cons - if you intend to raise the truck, then the air suspension is a waste of money. If the suspension develops problems, an out-of-warranty repair cost will likely be much higher. You can get odd looks if you raise/lower the truck while sitting in traffic!

My suggestion - go for it!

I have to admit it, I was also somewhat skeptical about the air suspension. After 6,300 miles and towing 7500 lbs. from WI to Texas and back again, I'm glad I got it. It handled the weight of that trailer without a hiccup. It's also given me a nice smooth ride on our pot-holed Wisconsin roads! If I had to order another Ram tomorrow, I'd get the air suspension again WITHOUT hesitation.

Great to hear. Have any of you have any rubbing issues with the stock tires. When I test drove one I heard some rubbing when making a U turn in the aero mode. Also what kind of mileage are you getting. I would think most of you have the 8 speed trans. Thanks

I get rubbing in entry/exit mode and, very rarely, in normal mode. It seems mostly due to a bonehead design decision to put a little bump in the driver's side front wheel well to make room for some electronic part that apparently couldn't be mounted anywhere else.

It really only happens when the wheel is turned full lock to the left. It is mostly mitigated by me just remembering to take the air suspension out of entry/exit before backing out of my driveway (I still usually forget). On the up side it doesn't seem to cause any problems.

I'm pretty happy with mine. I don't tow very often and I can't say that the ride is any better or worse than the regular suspension but I can say the truck handles pretty good for something the size of a baby whale.

I absolutly love it for many of the reasons already said in the responses you have gotten. Great ride with nice versitility. Exit entry mode is great for hooking up a trailor or camper etc. especialy with a back up cam. Spoiled! All in all the tech. has been out for years and much has been learned on the dos and donts. Of course only time will tell. I wouldnt hesitate to buy the option again. I posted a nice pdf read in the 2013 section titled something like "A taste from the inside a must for us 13's" a few days ago. It has some nice air ride info that has not been common to find as well as some other great inside info fot the 13 Rams. Good luck with your purchase and and enjoy the air ride if thats the way you go.

By the way I have about 3000 miles on the Ram so far with no issues with the air ride or anything else for that matter. Thankfully!

Mike
