Default Vinyl fuel line repair

With vinyl fuel line used pretty much in all vehicles now eventually one will cause you problems. Either a hole or a broken quick connector. I tried the hot water to make the fuel line pliable enough to fix it without much success. Could not get the line to slide over the hard tubing and needed to form bends and ended up with kinked lines and no connection so I started over and used a hair dryer to warm the line enough to bend it using a tubing bender to make the bends cleaner and without kinks. Ended up buying a tool for $70 to help make the connections. They also make a kit that comes with I think 10' of both 5/16" and 3/8" fuel line and an assortment of fittings for almost $400. My hole was close enough to the hard line that I could not use a splice, so I ended up using a compression fitting that is made to go from hard line to vinyl. This meant I had to cut the serrated area off the hard line to let the fitting go over. I have seen images where people have fashioned makeshift tools from caulk guns and tubing flair tools, do a Google search and you can find images of this also.

Wow, that just looks like way more effort that is required. Makes me glad I just did the complete -8AN braided fuel lines right from the tank.

The old car this was going on is not worth braided. That and most times it is not this complicated. what made it so was the fact that the hole and another thin spot was so close to the hard line. The last time I had to mess with vinyl fuel lines was my 1996 Ram that I broke the quick connect on dropping the tank to fix the fuel gauge sender. That time I was able to heat the vinyl line enough with boiling water to put the splice into the tubing. Did not have to run a complete new vinyl line. Problem is if you take one of these into most dealers they end up replacing the entire fuel line. The factory only has the complete unit from the quick disconnect on one end, the hard line, and the quick connect on the other. The car I was working on is old enough that these factory parts are not even available anymore.
