Default Nite Shade Advice

Hi All,

I'm about to hit the tails with VHT's Nite Shades....
I've seen the youtube videos and I've read various posts here on the Z.
It seems that some folks have great success and others have a few complaints. I was hoping that I could get a little real world experience from those who've tried.

I also see that some black out the entire tail and others tape off the back-up light.
Is that for the law or just because you'd like lots of light when you back up.

Thanks for your experience and help.

I taped off the back up light for the purpose of light and it also does draw less attention from the cops in my own mind. It also lets people know you are backing up, and gives a nice look to the lights.

For mine all I actually did was clean them very good with window cleaner containing alcohol several times and made sure my hands didnt touch the lens after the last clean.. Went along and did smooth even sprays and came out perfect the first try.. Gonna do another coat and clear coat this week because I want a shade darker.

As above, clean well.i used a paint prep spray. Three very light coats and it came out perfect. VHT is very temp sensitive so make sure it's not to cold or hot and shake the can for a full 5 min.

I have two cans of Nightshades sitting in my shed for 8 months, I can't get the guts to do it. Mostly because of the law man, they already questioned my window tint I'm sure the tails would be easy pickings.

That is exactly the kind of pep-talk I was hoping for ^NFD HAHAHA.

Well -I wasn't planning on doing it till this weekend so between now and then- either lots of folks will post pics and make me wanna go for it.... or more warnings will freeze me up....

Ha sorry didn't want to scare you from doing it. For me it might not be worth the hassle. I actually thought of buying a set that are tinted and have my stockers to pop in just in case.

Well if you are really worried about the police.. just get an LED tailgate lightbar like mine.. even though my brakes are very easy to see.. Just make sure to clear coat after so they don't fade in the sun like mine did and now I gotta redo.
Well I did one solid coat and here is how they looked when I did them back in march.

And as you can see.. Very easy to tell I am stopping (I used my Iphone 3gs.. So it made the left side look alot brighter then the right for some reason.. Stupid ghetto phone ..)

My Niteshades is one of my favorite mods. Everyone's procedure may vary a tad but here's what I did and they came out perfect...glossy and smooth the very first time I used NS.

* Very light wet sand with 2000 grit.
* Dry well and wipe thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or similar.
* Three light, even coats of NS.
* Five light to medium coats of clear. Just don't run it. I used Dupicolor Perfect Match automotive clear in a rattle can.
* Wait overnight for them to properly dry.
* At this point, if you feel the need (due to trash or a run, etc) you can VERY lightly wetsand again with no rougher than 2000 grit. 2500 or 3000 would probably be better. If not needed, skip this step because those sand marks, no matter how light you sand, will be hard to polish out of the clear by hand.
* Polish the crap out of them with something like Mother's Ultimate Polish.
* Install and wax over them with whatever wax you use on the truck....they are painted now!!

And a couple of tips...
* NS over the reverse light looks better I think but it will completely cut out ALL backup light projection. You can still tell when I am in reverse but the backup lights cast zero light onto the ground behind me.
* As someone else said, read and follow the directions for temperature, humidity, and recoat/dry time on the NS and the clear. This will ensure a smooth, glossy finish.
* Watch some Youtube vids to get an idea of how to spray and what to expect. This is the one I watched.

* If you are concerned about light output, do what someone else suggested and get an LED tailgate bar that will function as an auxiliary tail/brake light. You can also check into replacing your stock bulbs with red LED bulbs. Yes red. The red LED bulb will cut through the NS like it isn't even there.

Good luck and keep us updated!!!

I love this guy^ I think he must have sped up his video by 5-10% or something because his voice sounds like he's tweakin'. Very clear and informative though.

Yeah, it's a good video. I watched it mainly to see his process and to see how he sprayed the lights. I followed his steps to the letter on the first light but had a really hard time hand polishing out the light scratches caused by the after clear wetsand. On the second light, I wetsanded VERY, VERY lightly and still had a hard time polishing it smooth. On the last light, I didn't wetsand after the clear at all. Just polished it really well with Mother's Ultimate and it looked just as good as the other two.
