Default Why the 3.42 gears

Everyone I speak with that tows a boat, trailer etc, says get the 3.73 or 4.10 ratio. Everyone on this forum states the same thing, Guys who work on truck say the same. Then why do Ram only offer a 3.42. And you can get the 4.10 with ONLY the 3500 with DRW? Is it more expensive for the 4.10? Is it easy to order one with 4.10 , as they are made on the assembly line and just stick in a 4.10 every 3rd or 4th truck made? I could be off but I think since the truck/car companies are under so much pressure from EPA etc and having to increase mileage they are forced to put this lower gear ratio in. Can I special order a 4.10 in a 2500 or do I have to do it after market for $1500-$2k?

unless things have changed, you should be able to order 3:73 and/or 4:10 ratio in the 2500. the 3:42 is avail only with manual shift, i think", increases mpg and imho is a great choice for light towing , small campers, long distances. i like the 3:73 and wish that was available in the 1500s.

hunter - things have changed. 2500 Cummins in 2013+ can only be ordered with 3.42s. 3500 Cummins SRW also only 3.42. DRW you can get 3.42, 3.73 or 4.10s.

That's really lame that you can only get 3.42's from the factory... pretty disappointing actually. By now you'd think they realize that the majority of people want a lower gears for either towing or to put larger wheels and tires on. 3.73's should be stock IMO with the option to go to either a 3.42 or a 4.10 depending on your preference and what you plan on doing with the truck.

Could you please explain what you mean? What would the 3.42 be better suited for and why and what would the 4.10 be better for and why? I don't understand.

Having 3.42 (3.42 turns of the pinion for every 1 turn of the crown gear) gears is better for constant highway driving as they keep the RPM down which will give you better fuel mileage overall. But it takes more time/power to get the truck moving. They will also have a lower tow rating.

4.10 (4.10 turns of the pinion for every 1 turn of the crown gear) gears are much better for towing (can handle much more weight) and are better for city driving as it is easier to get the truck moving. On the highway you will get slightly less MPG as you will be revving higher. They are also good if you plan to add bigger tires as it will turn them easier.

That's a really short crude explanation of the differences between those gears. There is lots of information throughout the forum if you want more otherwise googling something like "low gears VS high gears in a Dodge Ram" would probably bring up lots of results as well.

that is crazy, i would either have to plan on a regear or look at other mfg.

The manual 2500 has a really low first gear. I have the 3.73 rear end in my 2012 manual Cummins and I use 2nd gear to start and hardly EVER use first. The 3.42 probably makes it more like a normal manual.

My friend has a 3.55 on his Superduty and with the amount of torque the trucks make these days you really don't need to go much lower.

I'm happy though I got the 3.73, and I know theres still a demand for it.
