Default Buying a diesel with 100k?

Sorry it's hard to search on my phone if this has been covered. I want to buy a Ram diesel but really my price range brings me to ones with around 80-100k. I know that's not to much for a diesel but is there anything to look for? I know I want nothing that has been tunes or big tires or anything that strained it. I've been told that if it hasn't been done the fuel filter or whatever else will need to be changed right away and that's like 5k? Thanks guys. I'm newbie to diesel so go easy.

80k really is nothing, especially for a Cummins. Mine has more than twice that and it runs like new. Make sure oil changes and regular maintenance have been kept up with and you shouldn't have an issue. 80k is brand new. What years and specific engines have you looked at?

Call them up and ask! Take a test drive! An 05 would be a Common Rail. I don't know a whole lot about those but you really can't go wrong with any Cummins. You won't really know anything until you see it in person though.

I wouldn't be worried about the engine, just make sure you check ball joints, front end suspension, etc.

+1 That's the one problem I have with mine. The steering is so vague and it wanders all over the place. The trac bar needs to be replaced. Mine is a 97 though, much older than an 05.

My buddy has an '04 with 225,000 still gets 19mpg and has ZERO issues, hauls a 14' dump bed every day since new. You won't have much of any problems for the next 100k-200k miles...

We have several em 04.5 with 225000 on her virtually no problems and almost completely stock except for programmer and exhaust, also have an 06 with 175000 completely stock no issues, a 03 that was very modded no issues, 06 dually we bought wrecked once we got done adding about every mod possible most reliable truck and fun. Heres what to look for 03-04 will be a 5.9l with a lower hp but way better mileage, 04.5-07 still a 5.9 325hp more torque as well and not quite as good mileage but still good. 03-04 had the 47re tranny( auto) notorious for beign weak but still ok if you dont abuse the truck, 04.5-07 had the 48re and thats a pretty darn good tranny. Now you could get a g-56 or nv5600 manuel tranny as well. The nv5600 is darn near bulletproof but parts are hard to find but the g56 is ok as well. Front ends in these years were notorious for going through ball joints always has been dodges weak point unfortunatly.now once you get to 07.5 and newer thats the 6.7 which has more torque and hp but also has the emissions stuff. 07.5 was first year of 6.7 and had some issues. Things to check for
1- front end components are tight and no rattles etc or have been replaced
2- on the 5.9 let the truck idle and take off oil filler cap and look for any smoke( blow by) coming out of it. a little is ok but alot isnt good
3- rev it up to 2500rpm let it sit for a couple seconds and then let off quickly if rpms drop right away good to go if the rpms hang there or there is a spit or sputter u prolly have an injector on the way out. Its an easy job to replace em but will run ya about 2200 for remanned injectors.
4- make sure if you get an auto tranny it shifts good and isnt a sluggish or harsh shift between gears.
Out of all the years mentioned above the ones with 5.9 are my favorite and have proven to be very reliable just depending on how ya treat her.
programmers and aftermarket stuff isnt always bad it just depends on how she was treated and you will be able to tell if it has been beat up or not.another thing to watch for is on start up theres no smoke or anything like that visible and then drive her around get her good and hot then shut it down wait about 30 seconds or so and see if it starts right back up good to go orif it takes awhile to crank over if so injectors or fuel is your issue. On the 03-04.5 the fuel pump was in the tank so if your going back that far make sure it has the upgraded fuel pump otherwise it sucks to chnage out. Who ever told ya a fuel filter is 5k is waay off to fuel filters are cheap and we change em out every 8-10k miles depending on what shes pulled. We also always change our oil every 3500-6000 miles as well and have had very good luck with our diesels. Im sure im forgetting some stuff but if ya pm me your more than welcome to call and we can go over a few more things. Im not claiming to know everything but we have had and still have many diesels and pull with em hard everyday we even mod the hell out of some of em for just fun to so fixed about everything we could on em and have learned what works good and bad for us. hope this helps and sorry for the lengthy post just like to try and help out. Good luck in your search

Skinnysfd post is pretty good. One thing to correct is that all early 04's came with a 48RE and a lot of the 2003's did also.

I'm not trying to turn anybody off of this website, but for Cummins info, there are a lot of Cummins only websites that have a lot more info.
