Default Engine swap from 5.2 to 5.9 or HEMI

Hey guys, just wanted to get some opinions on which engine I should replace my 5.2 with. I know the 5.9 would be easier, but would it be worthwhile compared to the HEMI? What do you guys think?

Just so you know, I put 330K on an LA 5.2 in a Ram Van, so I think you've got time.

As to replacement, 5.9 swap is 1000X easier than a Hemi swap, nothing from a Hemi exchanges with the Magnums.

A 5.9 is the same block, you can rebuild your 5.2 as a 5.9, or even bigger, like a 408 stroker!

Yeah, the HEMI swap is nice folly, but to make it work your rig would require a lotta work. Most of the swaps with the HEMI are older vehicles where either carbs are used, or a stand-alone aftermarket fuel injection system is used (serious cash). I suppose, if you had the time, determination, and schematics of a newer RAM, you could duplicate the setup (if you had a newer donor RAM), but it'd be a PITA. For the prepared, the 5.9 swap is a weekend deal with time left over, the HEMI swap would not be. As stated, nothing interchanges between the HEMI and the Magnums, so while the transmissions will bolt up, you're still looking at major issues, complicated by the electronics.

I agree. It's just a lot of shaving of the corners on a square peg to fit it in the round hole.

The 5.2 is only 20hp less than the 5.9 which is easy enough to compensate for while the engine is out.

With a couple other modifications you could really produce some horse power and put the money to use, rather than investing it into a puzzle without a picture or box-top as a reference. JMO.

Ok, that rules out the HEMI. Would it be a better idea to change my 5.2 to a 5.9, or just beef up the 5.2? And if I were to beef up the 5.2, where would i start? Aside from intake and exhaust, those are a given. Also, I'm planning to freshen up the trans. Should i get a new one, or rebuild the one i have. it still works fine, but I know what can happen.

A good transmission rebuild with quality parts is fine if the cost is right. All the mods in the world are only as good as the cam, and while the 5.2 has a slightly better cam than the 5.9's, it's still pretty tame. Since you're gonna change the intake manifold, do the cam while you're in there.

I was actually talking to some of my gear-head buddies, and thought about just rebuilding my 5.2, and making it as aggressive as possible and keeping it street legal. With that in mind, does anyone have a recommended vendor for me to find an aggressive cam, the proper heads, pistons etc? Also need an idea for the fuel delivery system. I know the stock one was designed by HOLLEY, but i figure it wont be able to handle what I have in mind. Thx for the info guys!
